... that makes the most difference to how you look and feel about yourself?

I'm in my 40s and have always been what could be described as 'low maintenance'. I have pretty good skin and just use moisturiser on it; I never wear makeup, but used to wear tinted moisturiser and mascara when I was younger and could be arsed. I have very long, wavy hair that I'm quite proud of. I never use heat on it and don't even like cutting it if I'm honest, so it's waist-length and a bit straggly at the moment.

Also, I hate shopping and have no idea what my style is, so for work it's simple trousers/ jeggings and shirts, the odd long skirt, and usually boots. At home I wear jeans and T shirts. I'm short and overweight. The biggest thing I think I could do to improve my appearance and health is to lose the excess weight, which I'm working on. I'd love to hear any quick and easy tips that work for you though! At the moment, the most stylish thing I do is paint my toenails!!

Ironically, I'm the proud owner of a teenage fashionista. I asked her the same question (what one thing could I change, that would make the most difference) and she replied, "Dress less homeless!" 😂The cheek!! She is now disinherited...!

Edited to fix a typo.

@ScruffMuffin that all sounds great! Another tip is to find something you like, say a M and S item, see the size, go on Vinted and select New with or without Tags (so stuff people forgot to return). Cheap way to get pretty new stuff as well.

I think your approach is the right one, you know your vibe, but a few new things, plus good trousers/jeans will give you added confidence.

ScruffMuffin · 11/02/2024 21:12

I'll look at Vinted! I think the DDs are familiar with it.

Get your dds (ds?) to help you find great stuff, they will love it!

ScruffMuffin · 11/02/2024 21:23

2 DDs, aged 18 and 15! I've ordered a few new bits today, but my birthday is coming up so I'll ask them to suggest items of clothjng for that.

you need a fringe and some anti frizz

Lop some off the bottom too

ScruffMuffin · 11/02/2024 23:24

The Miracle moisturiser arrived today and I love it!! Sadly, it doesn't love me! 😭 I've got slightly itchy eyes and nose too. I'll try it again tomorrow to be sure. No doubt Fashionista will be interested. 🙄

Awww no that’s a shame - do you have very sensitive skin? If so, go easy with new skincare.

You look lovely. I would say only cut maybe 3 inches off your hair - you don’t have to go from waist length to bra length on one go.

Get your eyebrows shaped and tinted and wear dark brown mascara.

Find a deep rose lipstick that suits you and find a cream blush in a similar shade and place it high on the cheeks to lift your face. That’s all you need.

Fluffywhitecloudsinthesky · 12/02/2024 10:51

Oh no! Give it to one of the girls I guess (they will be delighted at your misfortune!)

ScruffMuffin · 12/02/2024 12:07

@JMAngel1 I will do all of that, except for lipstick - that's a step too far for me (and I teach woodwind, among other things!)

@Fluffywhitecloudsinthesky Fashionista is thrilled! This morning I have the rash, plus a swollen face, itchy eyes, and feel like I've got hay fever. At least it wasn't an expensive mistake!!

@JMAngel1 I don't usually have sensitive skin, but get asthma and hay fever, so allergic tendencies.

Hot brush through my hair after drying. It changes my hair from frizzy to glossy that lasts for days and takes me moments. Game changing for looking 'finished'.

AccidentalTourism · 13/02/2024 19:21

Oh and microbladed eyebrows. With makeup on, the eyebrow shape and size makes my face make sense in a way my natural eyebrows have never been able to.

ScruffMuffin · 13/02/2024 22:47

Will look into eyebrows next school holiday! I did brush my hair today, for the first time in a year. It looked a bit ridiculous, because it's kind of curly. The wide toothed comb and curly hair primer and mousse usually do the job.

I still have the rash, but now have strong antihistamines and also cream!

OK all... so I've made a few changes!

I'm using the eyelash stuff - way too early to see an effect, but any growth will be good. I don't even have any lower lashes!

Allergic to the nice lotion, but at least am using E45 now, so skin is nice and soft.

I bought two nice pairs of trousers and a bunch of new tops for work.

I'm dip-dyeing the ends of my hair, which I enjoy doing. I'm not trimming it because I don't want to! I'll probably change my mind in the summer though, because it's like a blanket!

And I spontaneously decided to get my first two tattoos yesterday!

Thanks all!

Oh wow, told you you were coming into your own!

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 17/02/2024 21:31

You have beautiful hair and colouring.
In the pix you posted, I see you wearing blue and black which I don't think do you justice. Try some warmer richer colours.
A bit of lippy is instantly brightening and cheering: a warm reddish orange would be lovely on you.

ScruffMuffin · 18/02/2024 13:44

Thanks both!

I've never worn lippy, except when I got married! I have 33 lip balms all over the house though, including several in every bag I own, and coat pockets etc.

I wear quite a few colours, but blue and black probably feature highly. I have a lot of purple, green and white too, and some lilac and red. I don't like yellow, pink or orange!
