Sudden allergy to something on face

I've used the same products for over a decade and suddenly have what seems to be contact dermatitis on my face. I'm perimenopausal and wonder if that has anything to do with it. Has anyone else experienced this? It doesn't itch but I keep getting tiny blisters that look like spots. My skin is also quite dry compared to normal. I'm going to see the GP because it's got to the point my face is a mess but am hoping someone else has experience.

My allergies became much worse in peri and the Doctor said it is a very significant time for them to worsen or get new ones. Do any of your products have perfume/parfum in because my sensitivity to that went through the roof.

I became allergic to hair dye at this time, never was before.

I use Clinique now with no issue.

I'd blame perimenopause, all sorts of weird things started happening to me

MrTiddlesTheCat · 10/02/2024 11:05

Female hormones are anti-inflammatory. That's why allergies appear or get worse as you approach menopause. You hormone levels reduce so the inflammation gets worse.

I never had allergies in my youth. Now I'm plagued with the buggers.

I've used Clinique for 11 years and my skin has loved it up until now. It's so frustrating. I don't think there are any perfumes in Clinique and I'm ok with other perfumed stuff on my body, it's just my poor face. It feels like spotty sandpaper. It got worse when I ran out of my normal cleanser and used different ones for a month. It improved when I went back to my normal one then has flared again.

I'm peri on HRT and have very sensitive skin so have always been mindful of what I use and have always had very clear, healthy looking skin (I'm very pale and have avoided the sun all my life and have never smoked) - in the last 8 months, my skin went haywire and I had tiny blisters that would flare up overnight and really sore, red skin especially around my cheeks. I felt like I was going through puberty as I looked like I had acne. GP thought it was rosacea brought on by fluctuations in my hormones and prescribed me a gel that cleared it up within a few weeks (improvement within a few days, it was miraculous... Well, it was science) so I'm sure they can help! I didn't realise how miserable and self conscious it was making me until it cleared up. Peri/meno is such a f*cker.

The prescription stuff was Rozex. Worked wonders for me!

Lastminutebride · 10/02/2024 12:55

I had the same. My skin started to come out in small patches of dry, red sore skin. This lasted for a couple of months and then one morning it was much much worse, my face was swollen, itchy and painful

i was prescribed a cream call protopic and within a couple of days it had all cleared up.

Orangello · 10/02/2024 18:32

is it all over or in certain areas only?

GN637 · 10/02/2024 21:04

@Orangello it's mainly my forehead, top of my cheeks near my eyes, chin and sometimes my nose. The lower 3/4 of my cheeks seem ok mostly.

It's looking better today after one night slathered in thick Nivea and a day and night coated in coconut oil. It's still pretty dry though especially my forehead and the end of my nose.

GP thinks rosacea and has given me antibiotic cream for 3 months with a review after 1 month to see if it's helping. Just another thing to add to the list of gifts my 40s keep giving 🙄

I had same diagnosis nearly 3 months ago, it started improving within days and cleared up (with no return, touch wood) within a fortnight so hopefully you have similar success!

GN637 · 15/02/2024 23:56

@bingohandjob it's much better already so here's hoping. Glad you had a good result too and I hope it doesn't come back.
