How to wash hot cloths for cleansing?

InAPickle12345 · 09/02/2024 17:49

Just wondering... I use a cleansing oil and hot cloth every night. I wear quite a lot of make up. Really happy with my products and routine... but I'm finding I can't get my facecloths properly clean and I end up chucking them out and replacing regularly. Is this just something I have to do with hot cloth cleansing or should I be using a different fabric, washing detergent, be boiling them? I'm currently using 100% cotton, navy, fluffy type cloths.

My latest batch are now starting to feel like there's a product build up again so I'll have to buy some new ones tomorrow. Would be much better for my purse and the environment if I could actually maintain them though.

Any suggestions?

what are you washing them with?

LightSwerve · 09/02/2024 17:53

I would boil wash them in a pan I think.

I also maybe wouldn't worry about a bit of buildup, it is only the same stuff you put on your face anyway?

suki1964 · 09/02/2024 17:54

The old fashioned way, in a saucepan of water and soap powder and boil

mdinbc · 09/02/2024 17:55

I will give a bit of a wash with hand soap to get rid of the make-up, then toss them in the washing. All of our facecloths are white, so they go in with linen and bedding on a hot wash.

JackOrMeryl · 09/02/2024 17:56

How hot do you wash them in the machine? I use the same cleansing method as you and don't have an issue. I've been doing this for over ten years and my flannels come out perfectly clean at 60 degrees.

fragglerockrocks · 09/02/2024 17:56

I use one flannel a day (If wearing super heavy make up I might use a second after sloughing off the top layer) rinse them through and let them dry off, then once a week I'll bung them in a hot wash with the rest of the towels, a little detergent and white vinegar.
Don't worry too much about stains though at the end of the day they are doing the job whether in fresh or used condition.

Rocknrollstar · 09/02/2024 17:57

Put them in the dish washer - its hotter than the washing machine.

DillDanding · 09/02/2024 17:59

I use one flannel per day. I wash them with towels at 60 degrees. They come out perfectly clean.

I replace them maybe once a year (bulk buy from Amazon).

Boil wash in a saucepan with some bicarbonate soda and lemon juice.

TwattingDog · 09/02/2024 18:35

I wouldn't use a fluffy face cloth for a very greasy product like a hot cleanser.

It's more effective with a plain piece of muslin as its mildly exfoliating as well. Then boil wash.

headcheffer · 09/02/2024 18:44

Jesus you don't need to boil them. Likely cause of staining is that you're not rinsing them well after cleansing. Rinse well, hang over the sink or bath to dry, then chuck them in the wash with some vanish powder. I wash mine at 40, and they're white and they come out perfectly.

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 09/02/2024 19:44

I use flannels and microfibre cloths and just sling them in the washer with the whites which I do on either 40 or 60.

I used to use muslin cloths but prefer the softness of flannels and microfibre though after 12 months or so the flannels do lose some softness so I just buy a big new pack from somewhere.

GeorgeBeckett · 09/02/2024 20:10

Just don't buy white ones?

devildeepbluesea · 09/02/2024 20:11

Just because they’re stained it doesn’t mean they’re clean after a good wash? I tend to just go with the stains for a bit and replace once in a while.

CurlsandCurves · 09/02/2024 20:36

I use a cleansing balm, so similar to you.

I bought a pack of muslin cloths from Amazon for about £3-4. There’s 12 in a pack and they’re only small, not like the ones you use with babies. I use one a day and stick them in with the towels to wash.

Boil wash in a saucepan with some bicarbonate soda and lemon juice.

One or the other, not both. Mixed together they produce water!

Paw2024 · 09/02/2024 20:41

I was mine with bio powder and no fabric conditioner at 60 and they come out fine

Don't bin them - use them for cleaning! I've just replaced all mine with new ones in turquoise and the old ones (which are grey) are now my cleaning cloths

43ontherocksporfavor · 09/02/2024 20:41

60 degree wash with whites. Mine are muslin. They do get stained with mascara etc but nobody else sees them! I may be a slob though.

hottchocolate · 09/02/2024 20:43

I wash mine at 40 and they fine out fine

i use Elemis cleansing balm or just water

hottchocolate · 09/02/2024 20:44

If they have build up on I'd wash with soap first

ObliviousCoalmine · 09/02/2024 20:55

I buy the white terry cloth wipes from Cheeky Wipes and they just go in a normal white wash and come out fine; I use oil based cleansers and have no build up problems.

ObliviousCoalmine · 09/02/2024 21:00

GeorgeBeckett · 09/02/2024 20:10

Just don't buy white ones?

OP specifically says they're navy.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 09/02/2024 21:02

I wash them with towels on a hot cottons wash, a bit of powder, no fabric conditioner.

CourtenayDevon · 09/02/2024 21:03

@Cookerhood It's worked fine for me for 40years so I'll stick with it thanks.

twopencepetula · 09/02/2024 22:32

biological washing powder/detergent + 60 degree wash.

Then occassionally - say every fourth or fifth wash, do a further short 60 degree wash immediately after the main wash with no detergent to give it a really thorough rinse.
