and do you form an opinion about those wearing them based on appearances?

I don't form an opinion, but I think their catalogues free in magazines are awful twee

Flight · 22/03/2008 08:17

I see one woman at school, who is not particularly attractive but she always, every single day, dresses in boden from top to toe - seriously, every item she wears is pretty much Johnnie's.
I am a bit judgmental of her in that I think she possibly is very insecure and tries too hard to be trendy.
But I could be wrong, she might be great.
Since I got a Boden coat in the sale she smiles at me

Flight · 22/03/2008 08:18

Btw I'm not very attractive either...maybe we should start a 'I#m ugly but I do wear Boden' gang.

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 22/03/2008 08:26

The reason I'm interested is

I have gradually acquired quite a few Boden clothes in my wardrobe because the sale is good, and I like a lot of their prints, and I can't get to clothes shops very easily without the DDs.

Slowly but surely Boden clothes have crept into my DCs wardrobes, and even DH has some pyjama trouser things and a shirt.

Am scared we're turning into 'Boden family'.

at the woman smiling at you, Flight, since you got the coat. God, hope she's not me!

The childrens clothes are very nice, ds has a few bits from the sale (I would never pay full price). I don't like the adult clothes at all they really overpriced, frumpy and tatty looking.

I can spot the kids clothes a mile off but the adult clothes are so boring they wouldn't even register on my radar. Sorry no offense intended if Boden is your cup of tea.

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 22/03/2008 08:50

Why is everyone so funny about Boden, it makes me laugh at the 'fear' of being branded a Boden wearer - if you like the clothes then buy them and wear them. I agree that you can recognise the Bodeness by some of the prints/styles but so what. Maybe dressing top to toe entirely in Boden is a bit too much but a bit of Gap interspersed will help !
Ds is dr essed almost entirely in Boden or Gap or Fat Face because I loathe anything else - sports stuff, revolting football shirts,Next when plastered wit logos and whatnot etc .
I have a few skirts and cardigans and they're fine - dh has pyjama bottoms and a few work shirts. I am pretty good at recognising White Stuff on people too - I wear lots of stuff from there...perhaps people think I'm a surfy type ?

Ineedsomesleep · 22/03/2008 08:53

I can't spot them a mile off.

It takes me ages to go through the racks in the charity shope to find them. I sell them all on ebay to people who seem bothered about that kind of stuff.

fitfox · 22/03/2008 08:56

Flight can I join your gang too?

collision · 22/03/2008 08:59

I spotted a teacher in a boden cardy at school the other day and commented on it as she looked nice.

she told me how disappointed she was with it as it hadnt washed well and was expensive!

Am not sure why there is so much MN hype with Boden.

Is it trendy? Twee? Just because it is expensive do we judge others because they have more money than us? Am very about the whole thing.

If you like it buy it. If not stick to Principles and Next!

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 22/03/2008 09:09

It isn't particularly trendy nor is it twee,I think...some things are waay off the mark and God knows who buys them, but several pieces, like the plain cardigans are just simple, classic designs and fairly reasonably priced imo. I haven't got lots of money to spend either, I can't afford Brora cashmere so a Boden cardy seems a good compromise. The childrens stuff I think is good quality and the boys things a good deal more interesting/less offensive than the shite that passes for boys clothes anywhere else (excepting Gap and Fat Face)- ds is still wearing t shirts from years back and the fabric is wearing very well.

Roseylea · 22/03/2008 09:14

I have slowly acquired quite a bit of Boden clothing too! I tend to buy a few pieces each season.

I love my Boden coat, and in fact everything I have from them is nice.

I hope that doesn't make me a "certain type of person" though!

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 22/03/2008 09:55

I wouldn't say it is trendy, but it is flatteringly cut (on me) and good quality. Now does the fact that this is becoming more important to me than trendiness mean I'm accelerating away towards middle-age?

I don't think it is twee either. They're selling an image of idealized family life, but I find that quite appealing!

llareggub · 22/03/2008 10:06

I'm not sure about the quality to be honest. I have just bought a few things for spring and I was quite surprised at the feel of the garments. The cardigan (a sort of long shrug thing) has bobbled under the arms after one wear and the cotton top is very thin.

On the other hand, DS's cord dungarees have been washed to death and look great. The 2 jersey tops I bought for him have washed well but the colours are very dull indeed. I find the baby sizing very odd. DS is a skinny little thing and under the 50 percentile thing yet he grew out of the tops very quickly. They seem very short. On the plus size they look as good as new so I will be able to pass them onto someone else.

Flight · 22/03/2008 10:07

I have another friend who wears quite a lot of it and she is lovely, and looks lovely, and it really suits her...she is how I imagine they want their customers to be, ie she seems to embody that ideal sort of Mum (Ok how I want to be ) But she is really pretty as well.

The other one looks like (and I may be wrong here) she wants the clothes to make her into that person, when she really is not iyswim!

I don't want them to do anything for me except look nice in themselves and be comfortable - which my coat does well. I have a few bits off ebay too which also seem to be a nice fit.

I wouldn't ever pay full price and besides can't afford to by any means!

fitfox · 22/03/2008 10:10

I love many Boden designs and agree that the women's clothes are very flattering. They are also quite fun too.

My DS1 loves the funky T shirts

I have Boden woolen cardis I have worn to death and practically live in - they have managed to keep their shape and still look great. Their clothes often cheer me up on a dull day

fitfox · 22/03/2008 10:13

Flight I feel a bit sorry for your unattractive friend who really wants to be a yummy mummy LOL!

I used to spend loads on Boden sales but have become an Ebay queen in the last year and refuse to pay full price for anything if I can avoid it. Especially children's clothes - which, lets face it, they grow out of in 5 minutes anyway.

Flight · 22/03/2008 10:16

Yes so do I...I suspect she is a bit like me, rather shy and doesn't feel she is up to much so she spends a fortune on posh clothes to compensate...I just don't spend the fortune on posh clothes bit. I wear my baby sick covered jumpers with pride

fitfox · 22/03/2008 10:28

Flight I think we must've been triplets - seperated at birth

Lucycat · 22/03/2008 16:53

as an aside... the dd's school had an 'Easter bonnet' competition and one of the mums in year 1 had made her dd's bonnet with mini Boden cardboard... y'know the spotty stuff....complete with hand made paper daffodils sticking out of the top.

mm not quite the work of a 6 year old but it did make us smirk in a judgemental way

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 22/03/2008 17:10

Did she win?

OP posts:
Lucycat · 22/03/2008 17:12

no

an egg painted as a ladybird won - it was very cute and all child done!

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 22/03/2008 17:13

when we were younger our mums made cloth kits clothes for us - we always had slightly trendy things as my parents were middle class arty types - my dad used to wear an ex army great coat lining ( kind of furry like fabric) and polo necks and everyone thought him very trendy !
