Thoughts on spray tan for holiday

I have never had a spray tan. I am going away in May. It will be very hot, we will be by the pool on maybe 1 or 2 days. I will go in the pool but only dip a toe in type of thing, no actual swimming.

I am thinking of getting a spray tan. I won't have had time in the UK to get any colour before going away.

Would appreciate feedback on spray tans. I don't want to look orange, just have a little colour. I wont be going in the pool so I won't be risking it going streaky.

Thanks

I personally don’t think it’s the best way to do it. Looking bizarre and having to wear baggy black scruffs while the guide colour is on is a pain, and by the time you’ve travelled and arrived on the beach it’s half faded anyway. It works much better to use a gradual tanner generously every day for a week before you go, and keep using it while you’re away. It’s less inconvenient and the colour will last the whole time you’re there.

I always have one before I go on holiday. I use the secret spa app. Someone comes to your house and does it in a little pop up tent so no issues with getting dressed afterwards.

It always makes me feel more confident and holiday ready.

They're amazing! I get mine the night before going away. Sleep in very loose clothing, shower the next morning before leaving and it lasts about a week. Makes me feel so much better about being in a swim suit.

tocaboogle · 08/02/2024 18:15

@CampervanKween @DarkestBeforeDawn go you go in the pool? Are there spray tans out there that don't start to come off when exposed to chlorine?

OP I just put some light gradual tanner on my legs. It also starts to fade in the pool but it's enough to take away my natural blue tinge which is all I really want!

You don't have to wear black scruffs. There is no guide colour with a spray tan.
Gradual tanner makes me look like I've been rolling in mud...

LoobyDop · 08/02/2024 19:41

I haven’t had one for about ten years, to be fair. But I didn’t think it was worth the faff.

TheGirlInTheGreenDress · 08/02/2024 19:44

I’ve done it and it gave me a lot more confidence!

Lucilledeville · 08/02/2024 20:46

Mine came off almost immediately when I swam so felt a bit pointless

Garlicnaan · 08/02/2024 21:15

Mine looked great for 4 days then came away in huge patches, and it was quite a bit darker than my natural colour so I looked awful!

Are you worried about the tan coming off?

bryceQ · 09/02/2024 05:56

I always used to do this as I don't sunbathe because it's bad for your skin. I swim loads and it doesn't go streaky

WandaWonder · 09/02/2024 06:06

It always looks fake nor matter who does it

TroysMammy · 09/02/2024 06:09

I knew someone who went on holiday more suntanned than when they came home as the weather they had was awful.

CampervanKween · 09/02/2024 07:09

I go swimming and its never been a problem. After a few days you develop a bit of a natural tan so it it fades a bit it doesn't matter.

Gradual tanner doesn't last longer. It's just the same ingredient in a weaker format that you build up over days rather than a single application.

Once at destination just use the gradual tan as you describe and it keeps the tan in the same way you describe. It's just less faff as you get the depth of colour in one application rather than having to work your way up to it.

boopboopbidoop · 09/02/2024 07:25

OP do a whole body exfoliation for about 2-3 days prior to self tanning. I do it twice over a couple of days to make sure I don't miss anywhere. The tan then colours healthy skin rather than the dead skin which is going to flake off soon.

Once you've been tanned, keep moisturised. You can use a gradual tanner after a few days if you feel it is fading to keep it topped up.

If you prep well and keep moisturised you can get a week out of it.

I take a spray version on holiday with me if I'm away for more than a week and give myself a quick spritz after the first week.

I don't go in the sun at all if I can help it so I'm very versed in application.

Yes, I have to use a product to get it off because it comes off in patches. It's a thing that works for special occasions, but not for regular use.
