Sorry, another wedding one! Son is getting married abroad this summer. It will be an outside wedding and the weather will be very hot, like 30 or so degrees. Big problem for me as I don't cope well in the heat!

I'm starting to worry about what to wear. Middle aged, overweight and short with huge boobs. The only thing I have more or less decided on is the shoes; ideally I would like to wear Esska Charlie shoes, in wither pewter, platinum or gold, as I feel; I would wear these again, and they give me a much needed heel whilst still being comfy. Can't be doing stroppy nd stilettos when my feet are swelling!

I'm just wondering where people recommend to look for a dress. I know it's too early for the summer dresses to be out yet, but I want to get some idea. I definitely don't want anything formal. My main aim is to look nice, but still be comfortable and cool. Bonus points if I can wear it again. No spaghetti straps or strapless, a cap sleeve or floaty short sleeve would be ideal. No high necks because I look matronly with my boobs. A deep V suits me, or a wrap style, as long as my boobs actually fit in! I don't mind lace or chiffon, definitely not satin as I would have damp patches. I think I would like floaty, but must have a defined waist otherwise I look like a ship in full sail.

As to colours, I tend to never wear pinks etc. I am more of a blue/green person, but the bridesmaids will be in a soft green so am unsure if the mother of the bride will wear green. I'm imagining the general vibe will be summery and pastel, so don't want a navy, red, striking pattern etc.

Basically I want to look nice and unobtrusive, just to sort of blend in.

Any ideas of shops, makes etc? I've looked at Coast and Monsoon which are my usual go too. I've also looked at Jolie Moi after seeing them mentioned on here in another thread. Will also look at Hobbs and Phase 8. Don't want to spend a fortune, definitely under £150 and don't have a problem with buying second hand.

Also, when is the best time to start looking for summery dresses?

Thanks in anticipation!

Hi, my son is getting married in July and we're hoping for good weather but we're in the UK so who knows! I don't have any recommendations as such but have booked in to John Lewis's personal shopper service, its free, you just need to answer a number of questions which presumably will give the stylist an idea of your shape, style and what you're looking for. There's no obligation to purchase anything but could give you recommendations of outfits you wouldn't otherwise try on.
There'll be a lot of photographs on the day so you will want to feel confident in your outfit even if it makes you blend in!
Trying on a selection of brands could also help with buying via ebay or vinted as you'll then be able to set up searches for styles knowing the sizing is right.
Good luck!

Have a look at Aspiga. I got a dress from there last summer ….. I am so sorry I can’t remember the name of the style….. but the dress was printed cotton, deep V neck, floaty elbow length sleeves and crucially the bodice front and back was shirred elastic making it very comfortable, but at the same time fitted in to give you shape below the bust. Your figure shape sounds very like my own. This dress is comfortable and pretty and I can’t remember how much it was but around £150 and you will definitely be able to wear it all summer.

I have just remembered the name of that dress….Alisha…… and it is on sale on the Aspiga website now. It’s £90 and I think it might be what you’re looking for. it comes in two colours. I do hope this is helpful to you because having been mother of the groom myself what struggle it is to find the dress that you will feel comfortable in, but which still looks good on the photos.. good luck!

I'm not sure these shops still exist as I haven't lived on the UK for years. But if they do have considered looking around small local dress shops? My mother was like you when I got married 40 years ago. She was a size 20, not easy to shop for then. She went to all the big shops and couldn't find anything. We eventually went to a tiny shop in the next village and she found a beautiful dress. Nothing how she had imagined. It's just an idea if you have small shops near year you.

Exactly like you in having difficulty finding a dress I mean .

Utahgirl, I think you answered yourself! A blue or green floaty dress with v-neck and floaty sleeves! That sounds perfect for MOG! You may want to double check with the bride so you aren't too matchy with the bridesmaids or her mother. My son was married last June, and I found a dress at the end of March. By then most shops have their spring/summer dresses out and there is still plenty of stock.

Congratulations and enjoy.
