Semi permanent for root touch up - does it exist?

Hi,

So I'm in a bit of a hair rut. I have long dark brown hair, with a balayage that is very dry and frizzy. I also have quite a lot of greys now, which I usually have covered with a semi permanent colour matching my own natural colour and it does actually cover the greys. I'd say almost 100% coverage, so I opt for this over permanent as I don't like all the extra chemicals etc.

Anyway, my hairdresser appears to be off indefinitely now and after various consultations elsewhere, I am seriously thinking of doing it myself. When I go online though, there doesn't appear to be any semi permanent root touch up kits - only permanent.

I have dyed my hair all over using a semi before, but it barely touched the greys, although I only had a few back then. Do they use a stronger semi at the hairdressers? They do seem to leave it on longer, so maybe it's just that (?)

Anyway, could just do with some advice on my hair generally. I normally have a toner to cool down my balayage at the same time, but it doesn't do much to be fair. Considering going back to my natural colour, but worried the darkness is aging me/washing me out.

TIA. I'm pretty desperate!

OP I use nice n easy semi permanent and it covers my grey perfectly. It doesn't stay on for very long but I can get away with mixing up half the bottles and doing my roots, and keeping the other half of the dye in the original bottles. I'm in the same position I don't want to use permanent colour and can't afford the hairdresser's every two or three weeks.

Thanks @Unforgettablefire Can I ask what colour you use? The reviews seem very mixed. I tried Casting by Loreal years a go, but it always came out super dark initially and as I said, covered very little- no grey. The conditioner that came with it though was the best!

I'm a brunette more of a mousy colour so the shades I get are light brown, light ash brown, light warm brown (there's also light golden brown but I find this a bit dark) or dark blonde. They all come out darker so I stick to the lighter shades. I've a lot of grey now and it always covers it. The conditioner is amazing I'm always looking to buy it with no luck!
I don't like L'Oréal casting at all it didn't cover my grey but maybe I just have too many for that particular dye. I've tried a few different ones but the nice n easy always works well for me.

OP, as “Unforgettablefire” has already suggested, I too use Nice n Easy semi perm. Have done for 20 years now and I’m now 68 so get a lot of greys.😂

i too find it covers 98% of my greys. I actually mix my own colour now and generally mix half and half Light Golden Brown and either Light Brown or Light Ash Brown.

For stray greys in between colours which I do every 4-6 weeks, I use the cheap root touch up, from either Home Bargains or B & M, in Light Brown for £1.99 and is great.

I do the same, same shades as well. Isn't the conditioner lovely I've been trying to buy it online but no luck.

Let us know how you get on OP if you decide to try it.

OMG Unforgettablefire yes, yes and yes again! The conditioner is amazing!
I actually make it stretch over 2 uses as I love it so much.

I too desperately tried to see if you could buy it separately but no such luck. ☹️. If they sold it separately they would make a bomb I feel sure.

Nice to see great minds think alike! 👍

I used to use it all at once but realised I get the same effect using half.
I'm actually going to email them and ask what it is or if they sell it. Pure luxury I'd pay good money for it.
I'll report back! Smile

Sorry to jump on this thread but trying to look for the same info. I've looked at the nice and easy light ash brown but it says it's a Demi permanent rather than semi permanent. Is that right? Or are there two different ones? Thanks

JadeSeahorse · 20/09/2024 19:29

The ones I use are for up to 24 shampoos.

Just Google Nice and Easy semi permanent and look for the ones that say "Up to 24 shampoos". The big supermarkets stock them too.

HTH

My lovely hairdresser and I are growing out my permanent colour because I am getting grey roots so fast and it goes orange too fast.

It's a salon demi-permanent and it's fantastic! It's covered the grey and as it fades they look blonder rather than WHITE. And the demarcation line between natural and the old permanent is totally smoothed out whilst I grow it down

It's making my transition to greyer so much easier!
