i have never owned a suit, never needed one really, however i now have a new job which i need to look smart for, and also have a funeral to go to on thursday, so would like to get it before then. pref from a normal RL shop as it's difficult to judge whether it'll fit or not if i get it on-line.

i have no clue with regard to formal clothes, i have lived in jeans and jumpers my whole life. i really don't want to look like a frump tho (suits always conjure up this image for me for some reason) so something smart but not naff please!

i'm 25, about 5'4 and size 10, any one point me in the right direction please?

karen millen - if too expensive do MS - their bog standard one is really nice IMO.

I like per una (M&S) but go for (differently coloured but blending beautifully) jackets and trousers as opposed to suits (looks formal but feels much more normal. I get fed up of wearing suits!

oregonianabroad · 21/03/2008 19:25

I disagree: if you are not going to wear it ver often, buy basic black and a classic cut (no shiny fabrics either). Then you can dust it out once or twice a decade for funerals or interviews. Personalise with a nice scarf or jewelry.

beautifuldays · 21/03/2008 19:29

i'm going to be wearing it once or twice a week for work probably, i think you might be right with regards to black, i'm very pale skinned, think dark grey would prob be better.

i had a look at next directory but nothing really grabbed me. will go have a look at m&s now

M&S used to do machine washable ones, might still do them

I was in the same situation recently, bought one from M&S and dh said it looked mega frumpy. I took it back and bought another from Zara, which looks great, far more flattering and somehow more modern.

oregonianabroad · 21/03/2008 19:34

If it for work and you will be wearing it often, I would suggest a few pairs of reeeally nice classy wool trousers (dark grey, lined) and some nice shirts.

Then you can do upscale cardigans, big scarves, nice jackets over the top. Much more individual than a suit, imo.

beautifuldays · 21/03/2008 19:42

yes maybe that would be a better idea OBM, quite liked the idea of a suit tho.

have looked at m&s and next but nothing really grabbing me.

Next ones are usually ok to get you started, the one I have is quite fitted but get a size below your normal as they are quite big made. Order some online, suits will probably never 'grab' you, they serve a function (well for me anyway)
