Forced into going grey!

Was due to have my hair coloured this week but have developed an irritated scalp. GP has prescribed a rub in lotion and told me to use baby shampoo. I can’t have my hair coloured and she has recommended that if the inflammation goes down that I leave it for at least three months before I colour my hair. My natural colour is very dark brown and I have it coloured every 6 weeks. Decided maybe now might be the time to stop colouring! Any suggestions on how to do this and not look totally unkempt? Hair is shoulder length and I normally scrunch dry it as it is curly.

I think you’re lucky that your hair is curly as it will be less of an obvious/harsh line at your parting that it would be on straight hair!

Would you be ok to use some of that root spray/wash out colour occasionally? I’m not sure if that would irritate the scalp or not.

lots of women are doing this voluntarily, it’s quite a big movement at the moment. I love natural grey hair 🩶

Could you use things like - Plantur 39 Caffeine Brown Conditioner Brunette Hair or John Frieda Defy Grey Brunette Blending Conditioner - to sort of blend a bit?

I do think curly hair blends in better and grey hair is quite fashionable now

Embrace it, grey is in fashion.
grey and curly looks gorgeous IMO.

I've had scalp psoriasis all my life and I just crack on and dye it. Have you had the salon allergy test?

stayathomegardener · 05/02/2024 12:16

Get onto Instagram for inspiration, some great looking hair accounts for growing out the colour.

When your scalp is ok find a salon that can blend the ends with balayage which won't touch your skin.

Thank you for your replies. Been advised to not use anything other than baby shampoo whilst I’m using the steroid lotion, especially Magic Touch type of things. My hair is quite resistant to anything other than permanent dye so conditioners won’t have any effect. But I’m loving the balayage idea and there are some gorgeous colours out there.

It's still hat weather

I wear my wooly hat if I have to rush out with no time at all to do something or other

I've had it for years but luckily it's a lovely design

You could try a silk scarf in your hair or similar kinds of options

Or plait your hair if it's long enough

I do this anyway so I don't have to wash it every day
