What are your shopping weaknesses? And what do you never fall for?

Hot on the heels of the gripes about buying clothes thread, where we are all highly discerning shoppers, what marketing techniques, styling, etc., will you admit to falling for every time?

My weakness is pretentious colour names. If it's blue, orange or pink, then I'm not bothered, but if it's marine, gingerbread or cyclamen then it suddenly seems more alluring. Ditto named garments to a lesser extent (not when they give them random women's names, but interesting, glamorous-sounding ones like Pelerine or Masquerade).

My "never fall for" is the trend of pop-up messages saying things like "Trending item - 18 bought over the past day!" "32 others are looking at this right now!" It's either meaningless (if it's something boring like a mattress protector) or a bit desperate.

Cashmere.
I have a multitude of Cashmere jumpers, cardigans & big wrap scarfs/ponchos. But I still can't resist buying more.
My latest obsession is Crush Cashmere.
To be fair I look after it, wash carefully & debobble it regularly. I wear some pieces I've had for the last 12 years. I have some Ganni jumpers I bought in HK in one of the discount shops that I still often wear.

CortieTat · 08/02/2024 12:13

I’m trying to control my buying habits and only get stuff I thoroughly researched and bought from a list of “capsule wardrobe staples” or whatever it’s called. But then there are floral patterns and flowery flowers. I won’t say no to a Liberty print shirt or dress, always ruining my capsule wardrobe experience with some pretty flowers! Same with scarves, I buy them very rarely and try hard to be sensible about it but then I scroll through secondhand sites and oops I can’t unsee some, I especially love Christine Henry’s designs.

Me too. I'm a sucker for cashmere. Loads of Crush cashmere online at TK Maxx at the moment.

lindyloo57 · 08/02/2024 16:35

Sequins love them, I don't even go to partys, I have
Sequin dress knee length 5 years old still with tags on
Sequin jacket brought last year sale hush still with tags on
Sequin dress mint velvet brought on ebay never worn will resell
Seqinn cropped jacket brought when debenhams still had shops again tags on
I just ordered today a ghost black with black sequins midi skirt on sale, thinking it will look lovely in summer with a white tank top, I need to stop.

lindyloo57 · 08/02/2024 16:37

and I never fall for acyclic, and bloggers pushing makeup/ beauty.

MissingMoominMamma · 08/02/2024 16:43

I fall for anything that is really soft to the touch. I love bamboo clothing for that reason.

I never fall for polyester or acrylic.

narniabusiness · 08/02/2024 17:21

I never fall for trainers. I have a pair because they are useful but I don’t lust after them.

On the other hand, although I wear jeans 90% of the time, my wardrobe is full of floral dresses and tailored trousers and flimsy blouses that it’s hardly ever warm enough to wear in this country.

narniabusiness · 08/02/2024 17:22

It’s about time I realised that I ought to buy clothes to wear not because they look gorgeous.

HolidayAtNight · 08/02/2024 18:56

@narniabusiness Or you could wear the gorgeous clothes anyway!

Boots are another one of mine. I saw the thread about a shoe capsule wardrobe earlier and cannot comprehend such a thing.

narniabusiness · 08/02/2024 21:28

@HolidayAtNight I wear the gorgeous things for the two months a year it’s warm enough. Then it’s back in the jeans for the next 10 months.

Belovedbagle · 08/02/2024 21:58

My weakness is skinny cashmere jogging sets. Love wearing them in winter.

Petrine · 08/02/2024 22:14

I collect vintage fragrance - I have to give myself a fixed allowance or I spend too much.

JaceLancs · 08/02/2024 22:22

Diamonds - if a bargain and always second hand!
pointed toe shoes whether flat or heels
occasion wear - when I rarely have an occasion to wear it too!
love a nice nightshirt too
I also have most swimwear than most people I know - but in fairness I do go a few times each week, regularly do spa days (got one tomorrow with DD) and love a pool/beach holiday

I had 100 quid from Christmas in my Revolut account. Had a day off in lieu today so this is what I bought. None of your fancy labels for me but I had a great day and could feel the adrenalin rush after having had a frugal January! I can resist everything except temptation lol.

A magnifying mirror
A soft jumper in grey and white, feels like soft wool but it's synthetic and I don't care it's so warm and comfortable.
A pair of lovely soft fleece PJs
A furry zip up fleece a size bigger than my normal. For going out to the bins/answering the door in the cold weather on top of what I'm already wearing. Perfect magenta colour and it cheers me up.
A fold up heavy nylon zipped bag. It's for when I just take underseat luggage on the way out on a flight somewhere, but need to pay for a bag buy a load of stuff I didn't need to bring back. It's very strong and just what I wanted and fits in the regulation size underseat bag without taking up any real space. Belt and braces me!
A tea strainer for dusting icing sugar on top of my cakes.
A passport cross body wallet type thing for travelling.
A packet of jellies and a bar of chocolate.

GellerYeller · 09/02/2024 00:09

Massive scarves. Anything with a sheer sleeve/Devore. Broderie anglaise anything. I always persuade myself I can toughen it up with accessories and still end up feeling like Mary Berry or someone from the Next catalogue as if I should have added a ‘slack’ or mum chinos.
I never fall for cold shoulder; who made that a thing? Beige athleisure wear, just no.

Cantonet · 09/02/2024 10:17

@WhereAreWeNow I know.
I think I'm the one who bought it all ...
Seriously though I'm on a low buy & I'm funding my cashmere obsession mainly by selling on eBay.

Not any more 😂All been bought up by mumsnetters on this thread in the past couple of days!

Crushed23 · 10/02/2024 18:03

Activewear - I could open up a Lululemon store.

Skincare, especially if it’s a niche brand endorsed by someone whose tastes I trust (and whose skin I want).

Not really S&B, but supplements (either capsules or powders to go in smoothies). I am always looking for the next life-enhancing supplement. I’ve recently added maca root and dhea to my daily routine to boost energy levels.

Another one I thought I had conquered... eyeshadow palettes! There are about 3 shades of eyeshadow that look good on me. I know what they are, they are not discontinued, and I already have them. AND YET. Somehow, I have once again been lured in by a palette, just because the shades were described as cool toned. No, pink and burgundy will never not look like I have an infection; no, dark and smoky will never not look like a black eye.

Coats/Jackets/cardigans

Shorts - never liked them

YouSayChorizoIsayChorizo · 15/05/2024 22:02

White trousers in summer, all styles. I keep buying them in the hope of finding the perfect pair. But they're often a weird off-white colour. Or if they are white they're see-through. Or if they're not see-through they're too thick for summer. Or.... maybe I'm the problem!!

HolidayAtNight · 16/05/2024 10:33

@YouSayChorizoIsayChorizo You're a braver woman than I to wear white trousers! I would definitely sit in something immediately.

Just looking at my last post on this thread from 17th Feb... I have since bought ANOTHER eyeshadow palette that didn't work out. Why do I do this.

Makeup, I’m awful, I’m always snooping around like a magpie as if the next newfangled thing is going to magically polish the turd that is my face. Also knitwear!!

I know, it's senseless, esp as I spend a lot of summer either taming the garden or cycling into town. I think I had the perfect pair of white jeans in the noughties, and can't let go.... they just say summer!!
