I do rather love this, so thought I’d share:

New York Times on Gen Z / Millennial dressing.

Sorry, I don’t have a question.

Wide leg jeans in wet weather is just not happening.

Right?! I love the look of wide leg jeans and have a couple of pairs but they are firmly packed away until better weather. Cannot stand soggy jeans flapping round my legs. Grim.

QAnoun · 03/02/2024 14:37

Sorry but all these Gen Zs with their white sports socks half way up their calves look so unbelievably dorky. I could never care what they think of my clothes.

It's like when my 18 year old nephew tries to lecture me about feminism. I just laugh, because I was a pillock at that age, too.

Mine tried to tell me about David Bowie … Angry

Some years ago a lovely friend of our son very kindly brought him home when he was falling-down drunk, and then earnestly explained to us how to best take care of him.

QuaterMiss · 03/02/2024 17:07

Grin Hope you were properly grateful, @Floisme.

This FT article also seems relevant. If I ‘share’ it, only 3 people would benefit, so probably better to google.

“Try adding some feathers to your look”

How about this?

Urban Outfitters looks like the set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so pmsl at the idea that 20 something TikTok 'influencers' know more about fashion than millennials.
The socks pulled up over trousers and worn with trainers are fucking ridiculous. Am not taking fashion tips from people who think this is a good look!

I watched that video criticising the mum jeans - imho the look she recommended was fugly.

Maybebabble · 06/02/2024 17:34

Surely it’s entirely correct for the younger generations to look at older ones and criticise their dress sense. It’s only as you age you realise they don’t care!

Last year I read that leopard print was out and a sign that you were very old. Duly posted a leopard print short on Vinted. It didn’t sell, and I stuck it in the attic. This year ‘mob wife’ comes in and it will get worn again.

It all moves so quickly I’ve half decided I’m never going to throw anything away or buy anything again. Just rotate what I have!

May146 · 07/02/2024 00:22

I didn’t know totes went out of fashion…

BoxOfPaints · 07/02/2024 00:29

What exactly is a mojo bootie? I'm confused...

One of the "authorities" the writer is gushing over described a certain way of dressing in the video linked to as "being a Karen in the making" - so no thanks.

Whilst I don't dress in the way which so offended this person, I'm certainly not taking style advice from anyone who throws out the"Karen" insult

Yeah she dropped the Karen bomb about ten times while lying in her bed lecturing about fashion. Come back in 20 years, sweetheart.

1981 baby here (so technically a Millennial) and snorting that a bunch of 25 year olds think I care about what they think about my wardrobe. Benefit of aging: DNGAF.

Yes this, it’s quite sweet though. Also - even if we did care, we’d look right twats if we did actually do it. It will happen to them too one day. Hopefully they’ll be a bit less up themselves by the time they do get to this age, as their attitude won’t look so cute on a 40 year old.

QuaterMiss · 07/02/2024 07:18

I’m wholly fascinated by the lecturing from one’s bed thing.

Will definitely try it next time I’m invited to give a seminar.

There is a certain level of arrogance and entitlement, in spitting vitriol about other (older) women's appearance from your bed!

PaperBauble · 07/02/2024 08:55

I’m confused about socks. This seems crucial. I’m Gen X and feel I’ve never developed a credible sock game.

redboots765 · 07/02/2024 09:22

God I get so confused by the generation x/y stuff. So late teenagers/ twenty somethings are cross with thirty year olds that they are wasteful and buy cheap new clothing?
I can get on board with that.

Am I right in thinking that bloody awful, baggy joggers, too much midriff, stupid lashes, nails and contouring is out? But baggy jeans with a crop top and bomber jacket or a seventies afghan is in?
It's not exactly a new look is it?

The cashmere scarves are a good option, had me laughing.
Aged 50 I dress in beautiful, expensive clothes, never wear jeans, and honestly couldn't care what anyone thinks. I never stopped wearing knee high boots and I love a cross body bag. I have my own style, I guess that's the great thing about getting older.

Katiepoes · 07/02/2024 09:28

As my 50 yearold middle resembles rising bread dough I'll ignore anything cropped. As for socks - when I was in school in the olden days wearing any form of white sock but especially sport socks marked you out as a 'scanger', a truly terrible thing to be. So no to the stupid socks. 😀

My 14 yearold looks like a fifth member of All Saints, very lovely too, but I don't want to look like that. Gen Z are for smiling at, admiring and then ignoring.

Feathers though, I'd quite like some feathers...

MotherWol · 07/02/2024 10:34

I think this is one of the benefits of not being on TikTok - I'm not continuously exposed to the opinions of 20-somethings. I mean, are we actually supposed to take them seriously? I'm in my 40s, my priorities are looking reasonably smart for work and comfortable for weekends, not whether my gym outfit is hot or impressing internet strangers.
