Newly allergic to hair colour, after 25 years!

I'm devastated.

The last two times I've had my hair done, I've come out with a rash. First time on the back of my neck, which was like little itchy spots and the second time, my face got what I can only describe as small lines of puffy, red skin.

The strangest thing is though, it takes about 48 hours to start developing.

What can I do! Is taking an antihistamine enough? I'm terrified I'm going to get a chemical burn from the reaction after googling and seeing a poor woman scarred for life after a reaction.

@relaxandfocus Yes covers all greys even the most resistant. i dont use conditioner. I shampoo hair first, apply to damp hair, wait 1hr , wash out with water until no colour runs and then dry it naturally.

then when it comes to going out! i do a proper hair wash with shampoo, no conditioner, and style.

Sorry for being confused but I thought you were talking about the Leganza colour conditioner or are you using a different product? Can you please let me know the exact name so I don’t end up with green hair again. Thanks so much.

Sorry if I have posted this twice. Not great with technology. Can you please tell me the exact name of the Leganza product you used. Was it the colour conditioner? Thanks heaps

@relaxandfocus yes its Leganza colour conditioner that @App13 used. I’ve not used this yet but I have used Patrice Mulatto, I’m not as naturally dark as App13 by sounds of it my hair is a natural level 5 very ash mid/light brown I have max 15 to 20 percent grey. I used Mulatto colour one in shade 4 and 3. Shade 4 brown covers my grey hair in a light brown shade definitely not yellow, but when I had used Colour One in no 5 light brown initially this turned my grey yellow. I was advised by Elementsl beauty co that this meant it wasn’t dark enough and to use no 4 brown. Apparently it depends on the natural tones in your hair the lady I spoke to said, she said most people get a red tone on greys if it’s too light but as my hair is very ash with no visible red it went yellow. When I used no 3 dark brown this went a bit too dark on my natural non grey hair but the grey then came out as a mid brown. The grey coverage isn’t fantastic and it won’t be with any dye that doesn’t contain PPD or PTD/PTDS. It eventually washes out on my hair but my hair is quite resistant even to dyes containing PPD. What colour is your hair ? I’m sorry if I missed this.
@App13 yeah you’re right it doesn’t matter if it’s too dark as won’t last ! Seeing as I hate my natural hair colour I’m going to try it as soon as my Tints of Nature semi is out. I’ve been using John Frieda Midnight brunette shampoo and conditioner and I think this has helped keep the colour in a bit longer and stop it going brassy/too warm.

This is shocking.

I dye my own hair and rinse it in the shower if this ever happened to me does that mean it woud affect my whole body?

It depends how severe the reaction was. It could certainly cause contact dermatitis and irritation even with a mild reaction. I would advise being really diligent about testing. If you haven’t ever had a reaction to hair dye then Wella Koleston Me plus is supposed to make this less likely to happen in the first place. However for others that have had a previous reaction Wella do not advise using this.

Chatterboxy · 19/04/2024 16:23

I had this too 😔
mid brown shoulder length hair with a few greys coming through, ended up having bleached highlights every few weeks until I got fed up & left it to grey naturally, still not there completely, but my hair is in a much nicer condition now.

Thank you so much. Was very helpful. I have dark brown hair and silver greys. I will choose the bitter chocolate in the Leganza. Will have to wait a bit for delivery as I am in Australia. Still not 100% sure on the Patrice Mulato. Have also stumbled on a company called Palette by Nature. I am sure both of you have heard of it before as you know so much. Thanks again. 😊

667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 20/04/2024 09:59

@relaxandfocus I hadn’t heard of Palette by Nature I’ve just looked them up but this is a herbal hair dye based on henna and indigo for the dark brown, it also has beetroot in which can be used on its own to dye hair but as you can imagine it’s very vibrant! Usually the brown herbal dyes have a combination of Henna and Indigo or Henna and coffee. Body Shop before they were sold to L’Oréal and lost their way a bit, used to do a brown herbal colour based on henna and walnut(walnut has been used for many years to dye hair brown) and if you wanted it more brown and less red you left it uncovered and sat in a steamy bathroom, or if you wanted more red you covered head with plastic cap etc. It was very mess as most of these herbal dyes are and looked a bit like green porrige! I used to leave it on for a few hours. It was lovely on my hair but at that stage I wasn’t using it to cover grey so can’t comment on this. My hair was in very good condition using herbal dye and very shiny. I would definitely recommend a strand test and in my experience of herbal dyes they need a long processing time. Lush do similar herbal dyes. Herbal dyes for lighter hair are usually based on Cassia and or Rhubarb root which is a hair lightener, and often chamomile. Chamomile was traditionally used as a rinse to enhance blonde hair.

App13 · 20/04/2024 21:40

@rrelaxandfocus I too haven't heard of it. Though fully endorse indigo henna mix, one step process. I used it for years until I eventually got an allergy to indigo. Had I not, id be doing it today too.

I would though source my own henna and indigo , rather than a branded version.

So happy with my recent leganza dye as hair looks lush after 2 washes still

relaxandfocus · 22/04/2024 00:50

@667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast I’ve looked into the Palette by Nature a bit and from what I am reading doesn’t cover greys well. Kind of glad in a way because I have tried henna in the past and didn’t like it. The smell was too much for me and it takes too long.
@App13 I am definitely going to purchase the Leganza. Weird but I can’t find a full list of ingredients anywhere.

relaxandfocus · 22/04/2024 00:54

@App13 And of course I found the ingredients just after I sent my previous post 🤪

relaxandfocus · 22/04/2024 06:08

@667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast @App13 Just ordered Leganza in Bitter Chocolate. Won’t get here until the end of May. Will let you know how I get on. Thanks for all your help 🤗

App13 · 22/04/2024 07:33

@relaxandfocus if the shipping was that expensive, it mightve been good to order the Tulip Black at the same time. Ill try that and let you know as I too am dark brunette.

I’ve had to stop using mousse , my scalp developed what felt like cradle scalp scabby bits, and my hair is falling out ☹️ not sure if that is the mousse or just menopause hormones

Hi @Cocothecoconut my daughter had cradle cap and I was v worried about hairless for her. I used organic babies balm on her head,it went away and no hair loss

I’m sorry to hear this, I’ve not had any experience of using mousse for many years. But I would definitely suggest getting medical advice if you haven’t already, and investigating the hair loss. It could be unrelated to the mousse and be a medical issue like anemia or thyroid problems. Menopause hair loss generally is an all over thinning or thinning at the temples. Also the dandruff you’re experiencing could be fungal and need treatment this isn’t just a cosmetic issue so don’t feel bad for speaking to a doctor. Hope it gets better.

App13 · 06/05/2024 18:08

So I tried the tulip black today, its not black at all , but a brown like the bark of a tree and my bestie tells me that it looks like my entire head is dark brunette, so I think this is the winner for me atm !

relaxandfocus · 06/05/2024 23:57

@App13 So glad it worked for you 🤗. What did you use to reduce the staining on the skin around your face?

App13 · 07/05/2024 06:47

@relaxandfocus first wash hair, apply vaseline neatly around hairline skin, apply colour, leave for an hour. wash with water only.

You will get some scalp stain, but once you do you first shampoo wash it goes, as i intend to do today for work tomrrow,

I would describe the brunette as a cold brunette rather than warm=red

ChilliPB · 07/05/2024 08:53

Just popping on here to recommend the Leganza conditioner as PPs have also recommended. It is a bit messy though.

The Plantur shampoo works pretty well - it blends in the greys so they’re a lighter brown on my dark brown hair. But it’s not messy so easy to use every time you wash your hair.

I use a bit of both - the Plantur whenever I wash my hair but the Leganza a couple of days before if I’ve got an event as it gives a nice shine and better colour.

I’m not allergic but was spending so much money/time on going to the hairdresser to dye my dark brown hair, and greys were showing through after a few weeks. This method is much easier and cheaper and I never have an obvious regrowth line - I could grow out my greys much easier than if I had permanent dye on.

App13 · 07/05/2024 09:51

@ChilliPB What colour of Plantur do you use pls? I may have to adopt the same routine.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 07/05/2024 09:57

Natural doesn't mean allergy free. Some of my worst reactions are to all natural skin and hair products. It depends on what's causing the allergy, so be careful when trying something new, patch test and wait 48 hours. (eta) its also best to wait until any current reaction is completely resolved before trying anything new. If you've reacted twice to this hair dye it may keep getting worse if you use it again, not something I'd risk.

@App13 I use this, and I’ve just started using both the shampoo and conditioner which gives better results than just the shampoo.

The shampoo/conditioner works for me as I don’t have to worry about making time to sit with the Leganza on for an hour or so. I’ve also found that the Leganza is so messy I wouldn’t want to use it when I’m away so the shampoo/conditioner is better for holidays/visiting family etc (often go away for a few weeks). I do like the Leganza but use it as/when I want to rather than relying on it completely.

I’ve also seen John Frieda Greg Defy recommended which looks similar to Plantur, so may try that when I next run out.

Hi I’ve got my Leganza bitter chocolate and am planning to use it soon when I can be arsed with all the faff and mess! Is the bitter chocolate warm toned? Sorry if I have asked this before am worried it might go orange on my mid brown hair lol ! Am glad you like the black tulip. It’s a lot cheaper than Patrice Mullato.

App13 · 09/05/2024 07:30

@6667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast its warm but not orange more yellow brown i feel , no risk of orange as far as I can see

It really isn't a faff , I feel at least.
