Outfit for corporate hospitality

This weekend, at a sporting event. Starting to doubt that what I've planned will be appropriate! Dress code is smart casual and I was planning on wearing a dress, opaque tights, chunky flat boots and a leather jacket. Does this sound ok? Other attendees are mainly male and will be in jeans, shirts & blazers.

Depends on the sporting event.

Really? Why? I would think these things would be much of a muchness.

Rugby / football will be very different to say horse racing / polo

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 02/02/2024 14:48

Ok, think rugby/football then.

I think that sounds fine- maybe swap your leather jacket for a more blazer type jacket if you’re uncertain and think that’s what colleagues will be wearing?

Horse racing won't unless it's one of the big events and big days. What the OP suggested is fine for a small course on a non special day.

do you think you'll be warm enough ?

LlynTegid · 04/02/2024 10:54

What did you decide in the end, OP?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 04/02/2024 10:56

Went with the original outfit, was fine. Great game. Plenty warm enough - roof was on.

Personally I would never dream of wearing flats to a corporate event and chunky flats make it sound like DM's or similar which are totally inappropriate for any kind of event. Dress with tights yes as long as its not longer than knee length and a small (3inch ish) but not chunky heel would be fine. The outfit you seem to have described sounds far too casual.

This kind of comment really annoys me. It's 2024, it is no longer expected for women to hobble themselves.

Well setting aside the general oddity of "never wearing flats at any corporate event" did you miss the part that this was a rugby/ football type sporting event?

Your approved outfit would look ridiculous and impractical.

At a rugby match? Honestly?

It's a ridiculous comment. Bears no resemblance to reality and even if were true for certain corporate functions would be inappropriate and impractical at a football/ rugby sporting event.

Same here. Sucks that women still feel that to look professional they need to wear heels 🙄

Well the other women were dressed similar. It was fine. I don't do heels, ever.

Sounded perfect. I don't do heels ever either. I'm always amazed at what women wear to go horse racing. I'm involved with the horse racing world and going to a meet involves a lot of walking, very windy trackside and ringside areas and standing about.
