Same trouser style, different colours... But sizing and fit if different?

That was meant to say '.... But sizing and fit is different' (but can't correct the title!)

I recently bought a pair of linen trousers from m&S.

They were so comfortable and I loved the fit and style. So I bought a pair in every colour (because they're good value and I thought I'd wear them all the time in the summer, for both work and holidays).

However, I have now realised that the fit of the other colours is different. They pinch in the wrong places and look bad on me. I'm a size 12 regular length.

I tried on the first pair again, and yes, they are definitely a different fit.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes with M&S wide legged cords. Bought dark brown size 12 and they were a great fit so picked up black ones in store and didn't bother to try them and when I came to wear them they were too small. Took them back and staff said you have to size up for the darker colours.

RunnyPaint · 31/01/2024 22:17

Yes, I have found the same with M&S trousers. The 10 was bigger than the 12 in a style of work trousers I bought there. That experience taught me that it's inadvisable to believe any brand's sizing!

"Took them back and staff said you have to size up for the darker colours."

What??
And why???

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 31/01/2024 22:33

I've had the same issue with their jeggings, ....,and annoyingly with a pair of clarks shoes. I have such problematic feet and found a really comfy pair that I live in. Bought another pair in a more summery colour and I can't wear them long enough to start breaking them in.

Thanks @FishPie2 . I didn't realise until today that this could happen. This is nuts!

That explains it - the trousers I bought in the darker colours were smaller than those I bought in the same size in white.

.... And surely buying clothes is stressful enough without this to deal with!

It's a shame that, after finding a perfect pair of trousers, I can't assume that the same size in a different colour will fit. 🙁

I knew this thread would be about M&S. I find this all their time with their trousers. So bizarre.

NextPrimeMinister · 01/02/2024 08:25

Yes, the jeans. Bought in black and a great fit so bought in white, dark blue and light blue. Took them straight to get shortened.....

Light blue pair are the most hideous fit and sat in a charity bag. Waaaaa.

M&S love telling you this as an excuse for the ridiculous discrepancies they have across items. Given I think it’s highly unlikely that they garment dye it’s a ridiculous statement from them. I’m positive they would batch dye cloth and then the item will be made so the measurements should be the same. It infuriates me. It’s just cheap, sloppy manufacturing.

Grandmasswag · 01/02/2024 09:03

Haha I knew this would be about M&S. I recently bought a lovely pair of boyfriend jeans in store. They come in 4 colours so I went looking for a black pair on vinted. Purchased and they are a completely different fit! Legs are much much slimmer fitting. I know darker colours often come up smaller.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 01/02/2024 09:16

I learnt not to assume that the same style, different colour, different season will fit a while back, as I am a shopper that buys multiples, so same style in a different colour. It is probably that they are made in different factories / production lines and the pattern is not exactly the same when the fabric is cut. Watch out for new colours entering a range, as they are often a different fabric too - M&S are guilty of this!

HappyAsASandboy · 01/02/2024 09:46

Yes, with John Lewis jeans. Fabulous size 16 mid blue jeans that were a bit big. Ordered same jeans in size 14 and they're a different weight of denim, different colour and nowhere near as nice. Very frustrating!

GingerIsBest · 01/02/2024 09:48

Have a look inside the labels of the various trousers.... this happened to me with M&S leggings once and I thought it was something about the dye but when I looked in the labels I discovered that one pair had been made in the Philippines and one in China (or something like that) even though they were identical leggings, bought at the same time, just in different colours. So I assume that standards between factories are not consistent? Or even that yes, the way the clothes are dyed in different places impacts things?

It's very irritating.

Lifebeganat50 · 01/02/2024 09:49

I knew this was going to be about M&S!! I’m having the same issue with their Sienna jeans…I have a great dark pair, and have tried 2 pairs of their lifter ones but they’ve both been really narrow in the legs

Lifebeganat50 · 01/02/2024 09:50

Lighter not lifter!

JustFrustrated · 01/02/2024 09:50

This sounds right for M&S

I vary between an 8 and a 16 in there, even within the same range of trousers.

It irritated me so much, I stopped buying.

Also the quality has dropped? I thought I'd found my holy grail of coated leggings....and after two months the coating is already coming off. Primark lasts longer!

Sofabum · 01/02/2024 09:51

M&s are like this with everything. You could pick up 5 identical items and they'd all fit differently. It's very very annoying!

Same, hula hoop of a waist but barely can get them up over my knees.

kittykarate · 01/02/2024 09:53

M&S (and lots of other companies) will use different factories to make the same item. I always found ones made in for example Turkey would be more generous than than the ones made in China. It does show how poor the quality control is.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/02/2024 09:54

Yes, I've had this with Boden Richmond trousers. I had 5 g cm colours at one point, all slightly different fit. I understand it's because they are made in different factories. Annoying.

I also bought the same shirt in two colours from Gap a few years ago. The fabric of the red was much nicer than the fabric of the blue!

Clotheswoe · 01/02/2024 22:49

Thanks all. This shines a lot of light on this.

I wonder if M&S are a particularly bad offender.

OP posts:
BatshitCrazyWoman · 02/02/2024 06:21

I've found this with all shops. Even the same style in the same colour and size. If you tried on all the size 10 black trousers, for example, they would all fit differently. I think when the fabric is cut in the factory, multiple 'stacks' of fabric are cut at the same time, which means the cutting isn't that precise. It would be very noticeable on something like trousers.

I've also heard that fabric that is dyed black shrinks more, which obviously affects the size.

Apologies if a PP has already said this, MN is playing silly buggers this morning 🙄
