Is there a way to go from brunette to blonde temporarily?

DD is in a show and needs to go from light brown brunette to blonde (she has long hair). She would prefer not to wear a wig, but equally would prefer not to dye it permanently as she'll have graduation photos etc later in the year.

Any ideas?? I assume a temporary dye wouldn't be strong enough to go from brunette to properly blonde, and that a spray in thing would leave long hair sticky and yuk. Dyeing it and then dyeing back to her natural colour would be a possibility, but would be £££ and not very good for her hair I guess (also not convinced she is THAT dedicated to the part)...

Going lighter means using bleach, it's not something you can do temporarily.

Wigs can be absolutely brilliant, has she tried one?

SirWalterElliot · 31/01/2024 12:05

I think it'll have to be a wig (or bleaching and re-dying).

DreadPirateRobots · 31/01/2024 12:06

Sure. A wig.

No, it is not possible to make dark hair temporarily lighter. It's a wig or she goes all in on bleach. Sounds like a no-brainer to me.

DreadPirateRobots · 31/01/2024 12:07

...and I've now hit semantic satiation on the word "wig".

Spray in wash out hair colour

beetr00 · 31/01/2024 12:10

@DreadPirateRobots is that because you, too, perhaps are peri..? 😊

Definitely don’t go blonde just for a show. I did it once for work (modelling job) and it wrecked my hair. I really regretted it. Wigs have really come on. I would do this.

Ikeawarrior · 31/01/2024 12:12

Wig or bleach.

I am brunette and have been blonde. There is no way to go blonde that doesn't involve bleach in my experience.

FayCarew · 31/01/2024 12:13

Could she get away with a hairpiece or extensions?

MrsSlocombesCat · 31/01/2024 12:29

You cannot take colour out of hair without bleach. If there was a way, nobody would get their hair bleached.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 31/01/2024 12:54

Wig is the only way, sorry

Bramshott · 31/01/2024 14:36

OK thanks all - that sounds loud and clear! That's what I thought really, but just wondered if there was something I hadn't thought of. I think if she was going to dye and re-dye she would probably go for highlights and then follow up with lowlights which would be less obvious (but also less blonde, and still £££). Good wig and a wig cap sounds like the way to go.

Thanks to everyone who took time to comment.

@FayCarew do you speak from experience? I know these things exist but I am worried about the stickyness and non-coverage when trying such a radical transformation (though I guess it only has to look good from the audience!)

I've used sprays and they're not sticky but you need to use a lot to get a decent effect. Light brown to blonde might not be too difficult unless she wants a 'bleach blonde' look.

It depends on what sort of performance it is. It might rub off or something.
