What to wear with wide leg trousers if you’re not tall and slim?

I have recently changed my style a bit and bought some more looser type trousers - the ubiquitous M&S wide leg side stripes and a couple of pairs that are looser in the leg but a bit tapered at the ankle.
Im just struggling for tops to go with them. I’m a large busted apple shape, about 12/14/16 depending on shop and style and also short. I can’t wear tight fitting tops, though I know that would look best to balance out the bottoms. Or shirts as they never fit across my bust. Can anyone recommend what they wear with theirs that isn’t tight or tucked in?
Maybe these aren’t the right style for me, but I like the look and was getting bored of the old baggy tops/tunics and skinny jeans/leggings combo.

I've bought some of these sidestripe wide leg trousers and I'm a 12/14 and not tall, although I'd describe myself as pear rather than apple ( I have a huge ass and thighs) . I'm liking a loose white shirt with mine, with a black polo neck jumper underneath it on super cold days.

A wrap top looks good with wide leg as you can wrap the tie at the side, creating structure and waist.

Cami vest tucked with a cardi buttoned at top or french tucked blouse or shirt with a jumper french loosely tucked and if you can heels even if platform or wedge.

Cydonia · 29/01/2024 17:35

What’s French tucked, is it tucked in at the front and loose at the back? I can’t really do tucked as have a massive belly. Like the wrap top idea though, if I can find a casual version.

Loose t-shirt/top with a cropped cardigan or jumper over it. Tops that hit at your hip, with an open shirt over it.

learieonthewildmoor · 29/01/2024 18:12

French tuck is when you tuck half of the shirt in. It doesn’t work for us apples.

I wear the M & S relaxed v neck top in navy or black for work. They do a longer length one which with a long cardigan hides the stomach well.

Cydonia · 29/01/2024 18:34

Thanks all. I’m not sure I can do longer lengths, I’m only 5ft 2 and straight up and down, so I think I will be swamped. I guess I need to hunt for tops that sit just under my tummy but no longer. Easy peasy 😂

Batwing shape should work. Or a loose boatneck with cap sleeves. Anything with width across the top only.

French tuck is where you tuck in only the front third and then (and this is key) you pull it out till it is still tucked but there is some excess fabric above the tuck which creates a sort of blouson effect and mostly hides the tuck/waistband/any tummy.

CormorantStrikesBack · 29/01/2024 18:38

I wear a fitted cami vest tucked in. Then with an unbuttoned shirt over the top.

Britpopbaby · 29/01/2024 18:39

What about a long sleeve long line top in say black or white with a flannel shirt over the top left open.

Fluffywhitecloudsinthesky · 29/01/2024 18:39

I'm afraid I took one look at the lovely Claudia on the Traitors and cracked out the black tight jeans again. I can't make this shape work for me (short and apple). Sorry I can't be more helpful, I did wear flares for a while and that worked quite well with a slouchy jacket and the top hitting that exact spot (over tummy above hips).

HesterFields · 29/01/2024 18:51

Zara do a wonderful crepe thin top in three colours. I wear a camisole underneath, goes so well with those trousers and a blazer with either trainers or pointed toe flats.

PinkTonic · 29/01/2024 19:18

I wear platform trainers or boots to boost height without sacrificing comfort, then a blouse or very fine sweater under a knitted tank with a bit of swing shape. Or just a sweater if it’s the right shape/length.

Ah thanks, I usually do this if I ever tuck anything in. Though I would rather tuck in the back part as my bottom is much better than my belly!

I can't find the ones I bought on the website now but they have some similar sweaty betty ones (marks and spencer this is.

There are wide leg joggers:

They are called joggers but actually smart enough for work and super comfortable.
