Tips and tricks for thin hair

Hi!
DD1 has thin hair. It's always a problem because she would like to grow it long but ends up having to cut it short-ish to make it look nice.
Maybe she should go to the hairdresser more frequently?.... I don't know..... my hair is on thicker side
Any tips or tricks are very welcomed!
Thank you! ❤️

Forgot to mention (it may be important....) I don't do hairdryer 🤷🏻‍♀️ as in, I don't own one

Blow dry with a good thickening spray (John Frieda do one but there are loads on the market). Also making it wavy adds an illusion of volume. Highlights are good as they plump the hair strands up a bit. Also dry shampoo at the roots is really good for adding volume - though not so much the ones with colour in. Original Batiste does a great job, though the smell is a bit much.

Maybe a blood test to check overall health - thin hair/hair loss can be a sign of various issues. And a good multivitamin with all the B vitamins and iron.

A regular trim is good for creating the blunt ends that make it look thicker, but it won't actually make it thicker. It might make it less prone to breaking though.

I can finally grow my hair to shoulder length after many years of having to keep it short. It takes time.

How old is she? Obv if she's primary school age then tips about styling products will be irrelevant!

Getting it cut more often will not make it grow thicker. However, freshly cut hair will look thicker, especially if it's above shoulder length and blunt cut. Being above shoulder length will give it more lift, too - get more air in there and make it look more voluminous!

She can grow it long, but may have to accept that it's never going to look like that girl in her class who has irrepressibly thick wavy locks bouncing down her back!

Dry shampoo helps too (again, assuming she's not a child!).

If she's allowed hair products then WOW hair mousse is the best thing I've ever used in all my years.

She's young. But I do appreciate the styling suggestions ☺️ Her hair does need some help..... somehow it like to revert to some kind of weird mullet style within 6months of a haircut 😖

I have 3 daughters with incredibly different hair and I have to learn things I never needed for myself 🤷🏻‍♀️ DD2 has long thick hair with curls 😅 so I lurk around the "curly girl method" threads. DD3 has the perfect hair for braids! Now I understand how some people are so good with braids and do them all the time everywhere 😆

If she has thin hair you need to blow dry it otherwise it'll look limp and flat. Use a heat protection spray to prevent breakage, get her a silk pillowcase or silk cap to sleep in, reduces breakage and the need for restyling.

As a thin haired person, I eventually gave up my dreams of long, flowing hair and keep a sharp short bob.

I find that my fine hair looks thicker when I airdry it. I give it root lift by rinsing out my conditioner while bending over so the water lifts it away from my scalp. The effect lasts all day.

She could try giving conditioner a miss altogether - that's what I do now, don't miss it!

I hope you don’t say it’s thin in front of her, my mother said stuff like this about my hair to me when I was a child and it had an enormous impact of my self esteem. Just get it cut and keep it clean.

MarshaMarshaMarshmellow · 31/01/2024 13:47

There's a difference between thin and fine, too. Thin doesn't have great connotations, evokes going bald. Fine could mean you have lots of hairs on your head but they are all fine. If she's the latter, it can be spun as a positive too - softer texture. I'm sure her sisters have different hair problems that she doesn't.

If it’s in a short style, it will need a cut more regularly than 6 monthly.

Agree. My fine hair is always soft and shiny.

easy to wash and dry. As above a quick blow dry with heat protective styling product does wonders.

but use sparingly. Not too hot, no straighters, no GHD ever - a friend had her hair burnt by a hairdresser using hair straighteners on her - she had to cut it short to let it recover.
