Over 50s skin- too much choice- help!!!!

Bigminnie1 · 27/01/2024 08:39

There are so many products out there- please can someone help with what to choose or where to go for advice.

My skin is pretty good for 53 but I only use moisturiser, factor 50 and miceller water. I feel I should be using retinol and all sorts but no idea where to start.
Skin is dry and I don't get spots.

Please help! Thank you.

This is a very simple answer from a bit of a novice but I got overwhelmed and started… at boots.
I trust them.
I bought the no7 renewal serum, night cream and daily moisturiser and retinol.
it’s been transformative and it is simple to use

Bigminnie1 · 27/01/2024 10:01

Thank you- I use the No 7 stuff so was looking for something a bit more hardcore.

Although I didn't know No 7 had retinol creams.

No7 all the way for me.

Ah if you want to go mega then I’d start with a Dermatica subscription - your skin will be put through its paces but it’s very very good.

(edited to correct the its vs it’s because I’m so anal)

Retinol might not be the best serum for you if you have dry skin. If you do start using it, alternate with a hyalauronic acid serum. I’d recommend using a night cream or rose hip oil in the evening as well as your morning moisturiser.

following for ideas too

Skin of any age, only needs to be clean, hydrated and protected from the sun. You're 2/3 of the way there. Micellar is a makeup remover, but not a cleanser, as in it leaves a film on the skin that needs cleansing off afterwards. It's fine as a quick fix, but it's not, ultimately, a very nice product. I think in years to come it will die a death (see also facial wipes)

Two scientifically proven ingredients to think about incorporating would be a vitamin C in the morning, and a vitamin A in the evening.

If you start with an entry grade retinoid (most high street "retinol creams" that don't specify percentages, stand at around 0.3 and that's entry grade. N7, if that's the brand you're interested in, do a nice 0.3 and then a higher % 1% that you'll need to work up to. Remember vitamin A is a long game thing. You won't notice immediate effects, and you won't look 20 years younger. You'll just have skin that looks glowing and bloody good for your age. I started with various retinols, then moved up to tret, but have now gone down a step to retinAl and that's where I'll stay. That's over the last 5-6 years though. Nadine Baggott has some excellent retinoids videos where she explains the differences between retinol, granactive, retinal and retin A.

Hyaluronic acid is just a hydrator, and not an active acid, despite the name so can be used any day, all day. Some skins like it, some don't. Tbh, it's in everything anyway these days, so whether an extra product is needed is up to the individual. I've got dry 58 year old skin, and sometimes use it.

Hi ivevbeen using cereve retinol resurficing serum ( green bottle ) its really helped even out my skin and daresay helped with fine lines and crows feet .
Can buy on amaxon or ebay for about 14

I love Sarah Chapman and Medik8 products, but my skin is very sensitive and reacts badly to the hardcore products that Dermatica provide. You usually get a month free on Dermatica though so its worth a try (you might need a referral code which plenty on here will provide).

BirdsAreDinosInDisguise · 27/01/2024 18:25

I looked at skin and me but I’m still breastfeeding so it seemed sensible to hold out until I could have something prescription level. If that doesn’t apply to you it’s worth doing the one month for a fiver thing I think

Bigminnie1 · 27/01/2024 21:06

Thanks everyone- lots to look into.

I use Dermatica for my rosacea and it has made such a difference, my skin is completely different to what it was. You could give it a try with my code.

Medik8 crystal retinal.
Various strengths so you start low and build up over the months
Fab product

Whatineed · 28/01/2024 07:44

I've tried other products but always end up going back to The Ordinary. The products are fairly inexpensive so you can try out a few options.

They make suggestions on their website depending on age and skincare needs.
