Making grey hairs less obvious

I've box dyed my hair twice now to cover greys and not very happy with the outcome or the work involved. I'm leaning more towards leaving it. But wonder if I could do a re-style to make the greys less obvious.

I've got long brown hair with a growing it fringe that I'm trying to pretend is trendy curtains. I'm wondering about dying it again but a lighter brown instead of dark. Does that make the greys less obvious?

Then hair styles, i've noticed pulling my hair back eg ponytail seems to reveal more and make them strand out somehow. So does having a half up do though because my front bits fall out round my face, revealing the greys. But if some styles make them look worse, it stands to reason some styles might make them look less bad?!

Has anyone changed what they do with their hair to just make the greys more comfortable 😁

Bump.
I'm sure it's an overdone topic but Google didn't massively help me as it was just pointing towards highlights, which I'm not keen on.

It really depends on how your hair is. My roots are very grey and I have a side parting which I cannot change so I use box dye. With long brown hair, you probably have more options.

I use the John Frieda grey blending conditioner - if you google it, you should find it. It's a colour depositing thing, so I wouldn't advise going out in the rain lest you do a Rudy Giuliani, but it definitely helps me to go further between colourings.

I have long brown hair with a full fringe and find wearing it down the best option. I have lots of long layers and sometimes curl it.
I use a box dye twice a year and do my roots every three weeks, sometimes just temples and parting and sometimes all the roots
. I get it cut every 7 weeks and have a fringe trim in between.
The colour I use is medium golden brown.

Advice will be to see a professional hairdresser.

Although they don't give tips for regrowth, preferring instead to recommend you see them.every 6 weeks!

General advice is tho don't try and be too dark or regrowth is bad

Reluctantadult · 26/01/2024 20:09

I don't have grey roots, it's now grey whole hairs mixed in with brown. Although close to my scalp is worse than the ends, I don't have a line where it's grown.

Buy some John Frieda Defy Grey shampoo and conditioner. It's brilliant. I've found it more effective than semi-permanent dyes.

So ideally would you like grey/brown hair it just brown hair? If you want brown hair then I think you need to make a hairdresser’s appointment.

I use Plantur 39 Colour Brown Caffeine Shampoo. It gently colours the grey. There’s a conditioner too which gives extra colour. It leaves my dark brown hair looking as though I’ve had highlights. No one knows how much grey I have, including me because I be been using it for so long!

redheadsaregreat · 26/01/2024 20:40

Would you consider just leaving it? If you don't have a line it will just naturally blend in.

So many instagram pages and Facebook groups for silver sisters, growing grey, etc. very beautiful and inspirational

Yes, what I want to do really is get a better 'do' that's more flattering to just leave it. I might consider dying it a more kind colour first because the box dye I did before is darker than my natural brown and makes the grey stand out.

I’m grey on top around the hairline and at my temples. A bob worn down is the easiest way to disguise it.

redheadsaregreat · 26/01/2024 21:09

Just be aware that to lighten your current box colour you will be bleaching first. You can't colour dark hair lighter. You have to bleach it first. If it is a permanent box colour this can go very wrong and you can end up with very brassy orange hair. I would consult a good colourist. Or I would just leave it and let it do its own thing. Keep it cut in a nice style and be patient.

ChilliPB · 26/01/2024 21:18

I’d recommend the colour depositing shampoos or conditioners. I’ve tried the Plantur one PP recommended and similar. I’ve got dark brown hair, and actually not many greys but they show up a lot against the dark brown. The colour depositing just blends them in without being too much of a commitment (ie I could stop and the grey hairs would quickly fade to grey again - with no growth lines etc).

Reluctantadult · 26/01/2024 21:18

OK I think a flattering cut then leaving it down while the box dye grows out, then.

I use this too. I have dark brown hair and it colours my greys a lighter brown with a hint of red. It blend in really well with my brown hair.

ColourByNumbers88 · 26/01/2024 23:13

I've tried Plantur but John Frieda is more effective (and cheaper).

Seaoftroubles · 26/01/2024 23:29

When l can be bothered to do mine
( which sounds similar to yours OP) l've found it's better to go a shade lighter.
I get good, natural looking coverage from Clairol Semi permanent hair dye, light brown (24 wash.) l find the grey in my brown hair takes the colour well and it just looks like highlights as it fades. Might try the John Freida shampoo now though as that sounds even easier.

FindingMeno · 26/01/2024 23:41

I have highlights and it works for me.

anon1968 · 27/01/2024 16:40

I have my hair a lighter brown with blonde highlights, still shows when ready for colouring but blends in more. I use the l’oreal root spray if needed in between appts.

Funkyslippers · 27/01/2024 16:46

I was having to touch up my grey roots every 3 weeks and I wasn't doing a great job. My hair is mid brown. Just over a year ago I started having t section golden highlights and in between natural colour. Have never been happier with it. I can go 7-8 weeks between appointments and sometimes just have the roots done which is quicker and cheaper. You can be paying up to £130 including a c&bd but I pay £62.50 for the highlights etc & £55 for just the roots including c&bd. It's worth every penny not to have to do it myself & I love the golden colour
