Makeup suddenly doing this?

Hello! Throughout my life, I’ve had normal skin with a dry, sometimes flaky nose. Around 2-3 years ago, I started having symptoms of PCOS/ENDO (now both treated) and ever since my skin has steadily become an oil slick.

It wasn’t too bad - I used my regular foundation but just added setting powder to my t-zone. However now, even setting powder won’t stop the oil from shining through. Makeup has started separating too, so not only does my head look like a disco ball shining in the night, it looks patchy too.

even when not wearing makeup, my face actually feels wet by the end of the day 🤢

Is there a way I can reverse this or do I have to go buy all new matte foundations/concealers?

Few points:

  • I moisturize every 2 days because I found daily made this issue worse
  • This is what my foundation looks like after 3-4 hours.
  • It’s not a primer/foundation base issue. Both my primer & foundation are water based, so there’s no incompatibility there
  • My PCOS & ENDO have been treated so whatever is happening seems to be here to stay

Is this at night? Right I'm not an expert, but I'd try either skipping the hyaluronic acid or applying it in the morning only. Physical exfoliants like the ones with the beads cause skin damage, so I'd stop that too and just use the AHA, maybe every second night as using it daily can be quite harsh. I also like the REN AHA, and the Alpha H Liquid Glow.

Also how long have you been using your 'regular foundation'? If it's like 10 years, chances are you do need to rethink, as teenage skin and skin approaching 30 need different things. I use BB cream rather than heavier foundation as I'm getting older (have a port wine stain so appreciate the need for coverage, but concealer on the bits that really needs it works for me)

Edited

The exfoliation I use is MooGoo Exfoliating Powder which is made with Rice Bran Powder, Saclicylic Acid & Bentonite Clay so it’s not as abrasive as the typical ones like St Ives or even Boots brand. I’ll switch the Hyaluronic acid to the morning - all I do in the morning is wash, SPF, light day cream & primer before makeup.

I’ve used my regular foundation for about 1.5 years now, so still relatively new. It worked brilliantly for ages, even as my skin got oilier and oilier, but now the oil has completely overpowered it

This happens to me if I mix oil base with water based makeup without giving each time to set. Since you’re using water based, have you added oil based? Or is it possible now your skins more oily it’s causing a breakdown of the makeup
if that’s the case I’d try to switch to oil based makeup or something that’s going to block the oils in your skin from coming through?
I don’t have very oily skin but tried a la Roche posay oil reducing moisturiser by accident and it took every drop of oil from my face - so that could be worth trying!
your skin care routine sounds like you’re adding a lot of oil to your face too with the balm the acid and the moisturiser. I’d switch to a gel cleanser
And maybe change serum too.

All my products are water based, even my SPF, to make sure it all meshed together well. It was working fine up until a few months ago, when I noticed I was having more oil towards the end of the day, but now the oil is just instant. Thank you, I might test out some oil based products and see if a difference is seen.

Re the gel cleanser - do you reckon a gel moisturizer might do any good? No7 have a brilliant one in their hydraluminious range

I would definitely try a Niacinamide product, The Ordinary do one!

I would also use a moisturiser for oily skin something La Roche -Posay Effaclar Mat, all their products are very good for sensitive skin and then you'll be able to use it every day.

I don't quite understand why you are using products for dry, very dry skin when your skin is oily - surely that's going to make it worse!

No experience of PCOS skin, so i will say this is caveated with it might not work as it seems to be more hormones related.
But back when my skin was dehydrated from me not drinking nearly enough water, it would do this with foundation, and honestly still does on the VERY odd occasion I try and use it, albeit nowwhere near the same extent. It's like my skin can't breath.

What's worked for me is:
Drinking more water
Learnt to spot conceal properly - I have coloured concealers for redness etc, I'm matched exactly with the concealer I use (NARS) and watched a ton of YouTube tutorials. I now only spot conceal then use a powder on top. Not a foundation powder, as they break me out - just a setting powder

For me being dehydrated was what was making my skin produce more oil than usual. Once I increased my water intake, it decreased significantly.

I think you should change your moisturizer to something lighter? I notice certain moisturizers kind of "sit" on top of the skin instead of absorbing into it and can leave your face feeling greasy.

I would try using a setting spray for your makeup, I have to use one since I have oily skin too and it helps a lot. Also a foaming cleanser that is gentle but effective without stripping your skin of moisture. I find the ones in a pump are usually not that harsh. I notice if I only use oil or cream based cleansers my skin breaks out and pores get clogged. I switched to a foaming cleanser and my skin is smoother, less spots, and isn't as dull. It helps to remove the excess oil sitting on the skin. I have to use it every night and if I don't there's buildup. In the mornings I only use a soft cloth and warm water. I used to avoid using foaming cleansers thinking they were too harsh and would make my skin more oily but I have to use one.

Blotting sheets are brilliant.

I would try easing off the exfoliating if you have sensitive skin with rosacea. Have you tried one of the creams aimed specifically at rosacea? I think La Roche Posay or Bioderma do one.

If you're stripping your skin with harsh products and not moisturising enough your skin will go crazy with oil production.

Stop using any products that are supposedly for oily skin. I can guarantee they'll be making it worse.

Try moisturising more often, and at night use a face oil on top of your moisturiser to trap it in your skin.

I agreewith this. I found my skin has been less oily woth makeup since I started moisturising morning and evening.

Honestly, send a photo of your skin to skin & me and get a personalised prescription. It's worked wonders for me.
