What shoes with knee-length skirts and dresses?

AlisonMiranda · 21/01/2024 17:24

I have a good few knee length skirts and dresses that I like but never wear because I don't have the right shoes. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm in my 50s and prefer flat shoes. The skirts and dresses are mainly A-line. I'm short and apple shaped but my legs are slim. I have knee length boots but would like shoes for spring.

Bumping, because I too would love to wear dresses and skirts but have no clue what to wear with them.
I do wear fit flops with a casual day dress in the summer, but too cold on the toes in spring.

AlisonMiranda · 21/01/2024 23:31

Yes, I'm fine in the summer. I wear sandals or flat canvas slip on shoes with longer dresses. It's the shorter skirt & tights combo that I can't get right. I think I need to do some actual browsing in shoe shops, online browsing isn't helping me.

You wouldn’t wear ankle boots? That seems the obvious answer with tights.

If you want shoes, I think brogues would be a popular option. Personally I’d be tempted to look for some sort of dark suede or leather trainer, just because I like the comfort of trainers.

mathanxiety · 22/01/2024 00:21

Second the ankle boot suggestion. Mum boots are very in with dresses and skirts right now.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 22/01/2024 00:21

Most of my wearing with dresses and skirts shoes are from Pretty Ballerina, various styles, colours, materials and heel heights and a few of the lowish LK Bennett classic court.

In winter, flat, lace up ankle boots.

I don't like brogues with dresses. It can work if the brogues are at the neater end of the spectrum but I don't like the look of clunky brogues with a dress.

I don't like trainers and dresses.

Pretty Ballerina

I wear this kind of style with Chelsea boots. Comfortable and stylish IMO.

sleepysleepytired · 22/01/2024 00:26

I wear Chelsea boots at the moment. But not sure about spring as I'd get a bit sweaty in boots then. Watching with interest.

Check out Wonders. They have chunky loafers which Natasha Dancing says are ugly but I think are fabulous, and flat classic brogues/loafers as well. Super comfortable.
I also wear Campers peu or their Right shoes. Also super comfortable.

youarethroughtothenextround · 22/01/2024 04:23

Doc Martens.

Don't worry about your age!

cherrypickles · 22/01/2024 06:30

I wear loafer, plain DM lace on shoes and boots

I wear skirt and dress all the time and the only thing i sit. Like so trainers. I skipped the whole "floral midi and white trainer"

DarkAcademia · 22/01/2024 06:37

Do you lean trendy or classic? Or rather, would you LIKE to lean trendy or classic?

I’m in my mid 40’s and started wearing a lot of midi length this year and my slim, classic brogues didn’t look quite right, even though I assumed they’d be perfect, so I had a look for styles that seemed a little edgier but also flat flat flat and came up with Grenson:

the shoes, not the ankle boots.

They are super comfortable and the sole is super thick and gives me a tiny bit of height. My brogues also have very thin soles and my feet were cold, and this chunky sole is noticeably warmer.

Have a look on Toast and Solovair too.

A nice chunky loafer. Something like this (also a budget friendly option!)

PieAndLattes · 22/01/2024 07:23

Or a classic Dr Marten Adrian loafer. I wear mine with pretty much everything.

FluffyFanny · 22/01/2024 07:28

I wouldn't wear knee-length dresses without tights. But would wear tights and chunky loafers, brogues, or Doc Marten style ankle boots with them in the winter and early spring. Switch to chunky sandals in the summer.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 22/01/2024 08:33

I'm a bit puzzled by the question tbh. Have you bought all these clothes and never worn them? You never see anyone else wearing skirts, dresses and footwear?

You say online isn't helpful. That seems odd. Sites don't tend to show models with bare feet. There's an ad for a Nobody's Child dress popping up for me which has different colours styled with flat pumps, flat Mary Janes, boots and loafers, although no trainers,

There's no rulesI .It's just a case of picking the look you like. I like the pumps and flat laced boots. I don't like Chelsea boots, heeled boots, loafers/ brogues. Other people are different.

sunr111se · 22/01/2024 08:42

I pretty much only wear knee length or above skirts and dresses. Flip flops on summer, tights and doc martens or uggs in the Winter.

AlisonMiranda · 22/01/2024 08:46

I've worn them with knee high boots but don't love the look. I like shorter skirts and ankle boots on other people but I'm apple shaped and my legs and ankles are the thinnest bit of me. The proportions of ankle boots and tights on me just don't work somehow.

I'm also in my 50s, with a penchant for A line, knee length dresses and flat shoes.

What's your style? Are you more Hannah Waddingham or Jo Brand?
I'm somewhere in between, and wear Blundstone Chelsea boots or 8 hole Solovairs with pretty much everything.

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/01/2024 09:02

I wear boots or I have a pair of doc martens patent Mary Jane's that I love. DS calls them my toddler shoes though

Petrine · 22/01/2024 09:10

I would say that loafers would suit you. There’s lots to choose from now from traditional, which I prefer, to chunky soled.

AlisonMiranda · 22/01/2024 09:16

I'm liking the look of loafers.
I'm afraid I literally have no style @IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads For the last few years I've worn a uniform to work and defaulted to jeans and boots at the weekend. I was sorting my wardrobe at the weekend and thinking I'd really like to start wearing my dresses and skirts again.

My weight never changes much and my older clothes still fit but menopause has made my middle less defined and my legs more scrawny so I'm more of a pronounced apple shape than I was five years ago.

learieonthewildmoor · 22/01/2024 09:41

I’m apple shaped, and the chunky loafers and longer classic brogues are good at balancing the skinny legs/ chunky middle. Dainty shoes can make me look like a pony.

SchoolQuestionnaire · 22/01/2024 09:47

I agree with pp’s about ankle boots in winter. I’ve got some flat Chelsea’s and a biker style boot that I wear with midi dresses. I also really love a R&B loafer. Chester is my staple and I have loads of colours, but I bought myself a pair of Solo’s for this winter. I love them but annoyingly they remind me a bit of the school shoes I insisted on having that my mum used to go mad about. They say styles always come back around.

I feel the same. Ankle boots and skirts seem to look good on everyone except me!
