Using a dressmaker/tailor?

Does anyone have experience of the above?

I was out shopping today, saw some nice tunic dresses in a very basic shape, around £300.

I was thinking it might be cheaper to get the fabric and have it made.

I haven't used a tailor but I know someone who used to make stage costumes and I sent her a pic of one dress, she said "easy to make, look for a tailor". She's not in the UK so can't help.

They were cotton blends. I know cotton has premium pricing in clothing now but wondering how much it costs in a store.

The last time I bought fabric is too long ago for me to have any idea what it costs now. I do know that the retail price of good fabric (the sort of thing that used to be available at Laura Ashley or Liberty or John Lewis) is rather terrifyingly high.

Obviously it must be cheaper wholesale - but even my scant knowledge makes me incredibly scornful of brands selling £20 dresses - whilst also despairing at greedy mark-ups for a simple tunic in an ordinary fabric.

But there are lots of dressmakers here, so I hope they can help you!

I've had a lot of clothes made for me, not because it is cheaper but because the results are perfect for me in colour and style.
