Upper lip hair removal

Weirdaf1 · 20/01/2024 22:19

I find myself in a new period of my life where I have to think about hair removal.
I don't have a lot of body hair and always dealt with it by shaving.
I'm in my late 40s now and while I've been dealing with the odd chin hair from time to time I've now noticed the beginnings of a fetching moustache.
I'm clueless about the best way to deal with it.
Is it something to leave to a professional or is it a straightforward DIY job?
I have sensitive skin. Would I be better with bleach, waxing, cream or something else?
Thanks

I had laser treatment on my top lip nearly twenty years ago, and it’s still hair free. It does hurt, but it doesn’t take long. You have to go for about 6 sessions.

I also have quite sensitive skin, by the way.

Thanks. That sounds ideal. Is it expensive?

I use hot wax, approx once a month. Takes about 10 minutes for the wax to heat up and 5 mins to wax my upper lip and eyebrows. Takes a little bit of practice but it works, quick and easy and low cost. I have a little bit of redness but it quickly fades.

Laser is expensive and only is very effective on dark hair (so they say) so depends on that. But get a consultation for sure!

I have always waxed once a month with a beautician and have sensitive skin and it's always fine.

for the lip: either shave it every morning (I do this and know others who do as well), ir have it lasered.

for the chin: electrolysis. Chin hairnis hormonal and if you pluck it that usually stimulates the other nearby follicles to statt geowing dark hair too. So you pluck one hair and five grow back, you pluck five and ten grow back wtc. Do electrolysis.

I can’t remember how much it was - it was a long time ago!

But I have my eyebrows waxed every 3 weeks. That’s costing me about £200 per year. Multiply by 20. I’m fairly sure it’s not £4000!

(You can’t have laser on eyebrows, because of the risk to your eyes.)

I just pluck them out as I see them.. part of my morning routine

Shock this explains why my chin hairs are growing in number! Thank you

I've used cream on top lip for years, very cheap and quick. Once a week, don't leave it on for long and wipe off gently with wet cotton wool. Chin hairs are more of a problem and electrolysis only works on dark ones so don't wait until they start going grey! I manage ok with tweezers but you do need a daily check as they sprout overnight. My routine includes dermablading the lower chin and just underneath (buy off Amazon, brilliant) which makes the naughty ones easier to spot. Oh, I'm in my 70s so do expect hair on my chinny chin chin!

Minustendegrees · 21/01/2024 07:16

I used to have mine threaded off and got fed up of it so use a dermaplane razor to shave it off . It’s quick and cheap.

Nofilteritwonthelp · 21/01/2024 07:25

Please whatever you do don't shave your face. I now have great aunts in their 70s and 80s who I assume did this and now have fully fledged beards. Wax OP, or laser or electrolysis

Gervhill · 21/01/2024 07:37

I get mine threaded when I get me eyebrows done about once a month, works perfectly and no redness. I’m not thinking about having my entire lower face done having seen how much fluff is on my cheeks and my makeup sitting on top of it!

user50and · 21/01/2024 07:40

I buy the Veet facial strip wax and whip it off every couple of months. Used to get it done in a salon but this does the job just as well. Takes seconds.

Over40Overdating · 21/01/2024 07:42

Electrolysis! Takes a few sessions but after years of plucking my thick black whiskers it’s been miraculous to see the wiry buggers get weaker and disappear.

The ‘if you shave your face you’ll grow a beard’ thing is untrue. Shaving your face can actually remove dead skin cells and help skincare absorb better. It just grows back with a blunt end. If shaving stimulated hair growth there wouldn’t be a single bald man in the world.

What will actually give you a beard as you get older is bloody hormones.

Pigeon851 · 21/01/2024 08:36

Best thing ever: a little metal tightly coiled spring type thing with plastic handles at each end. Search amazon for coiled hair remover, they cost next to nothing. You twiddle them over your top lip and they pull out the hairs. It's a bit like threading.

If u are in the UK try Sk:n laser clinics
