New to Eyeliners - Am I Missing Something

I would like to experiment with colour on hooded eyes, specifically eyeliner in the upper waterline. Ideally, would like to try metallic shades in emerald, navy and purple.

Went to Beauty Outlet as was passing, swatched some lovely shades but on inspection they do not seem to twist up. You can’t sharpen solid plastic, so do you just get the little stub at the top?

I am going to big Boots and Superdrug tomorrow - any recommendations for eyeliners that fit above description?

Purple is the hardest to nail, as I would like it on the plum, almost burgundy side than lilac / blue….

I love the Victoria Beckham satin kajal pencils.

So soft & highly pigmented.

But, do buy her sharpener - my old one didn't work.

I'm trying to picture this but that sounds very strange! The non-sharpening bit I mean.

Scandaleyes (I can't remember who makes this, might be Maybelline but definitely stocked at Boots and Superdrug) is a twist-up eyeliner which I really like. I don't know if it comes in that shade though. I'm sure other standard high street brands do similar pencils too.

I second the VB ones. They do a burgundy plum colour.

Crimblecrumble1990 · 20/01/2024 18:28

I think I know what you mean - but actually you do sharpen the 'plasticy' bit around the top. You need a good sharpener. For example the Victoria beckham eyeliners and accompanying sharpener are good.

I thought the same thing and actually ended up buying multiple eyeliners thinking I had 'used them up' duh!

Urban decay do a good range of colours. Their primer is also good if you find any eyeliner is smudging.

Yeah you need to sharpen them. They don't make that obvious though

Before forming out on VB, worth a trip to Kiko to see their pencils. I bought the most beautiful brown shade for 8 quid. It lasts all day, doesn’t smudge, easy to sharpen, intense colour. I have a very similar shade in a Chanel pencil, and the Kiko one is far superior.

I'm here to recommend Kiko's eyeshadow pencils and having seen their cheap price am worried they're being discontinued. They just twist up so no sharpening prrroblem I don't think.

Scarletttulips · 21/01/2024 01:09

Am I recommend a V shape above your lids - eyeshadow obviously! Which helps the eye shape?

LadyEloise1 · 21/01/2024 02:00

I love Kiko's eye pencils too.
I wish there was a Kiko shop in Ireland.

chatw0o0 · 21/01/2024 02:54

I prefer the twist up versions, to avoid faffing about with a sharpener.

Currently using Clinique Quickliner in Dark Chocolate, but a quick look online shows their other colours are fairly standard (ie, brown, grey, black).

I've also got Emerald and Plum colours in a twist up from Rimmel. Mine are a few years old now but I think they're more or less the same as these ones (linked).

Avon glimmersticks are excellent.

DramaAlpaca · 21/01/2024 03:30

I use VB as eyeliner, with Clinique pencils above. Looks good and available in lots of colours.

Boots No 7 Amazing eye pencils are great - they are easy to use and just glide on.
As does the Kiko one I have.
Unlike the Body Shop Freestyle jumbo crayon in Unfazed which is a beautiful shade, perfect for me but remains hard so is difficult to use on my sensitive eyes.
I bought a Glimmerstick lately on the back of all the praise they get on Mumsnet - it's ok.
Personally I prefer the pencils you have to sharpen rather than the twist up ones.
They are usually softer and don't drag on the eye lid.
I find most twist up ones drag on the eyelid.
Estee Lauder pencils are lovely too but expensive.
Because the Victoria Beckham eye pencil is expensive I'll have to wait to see it in person as it's not sold in any shop in Ireland afaik.
Charlotte Tilbury pencils are nice and soft also.
Sephora eye pencils are worth a look.
Lancôme pencils are also a good option.
Not as soft as the others but if you live in a warm climate you might not want a soft pencil.
Boots No 7 dual size sharpener is very good. Suggested by Mumsnetters.

ReadyForSeason · 21/01/2024 16:20

I have just bought 2 beautiful eyeliners from Sleek, purple and dark peacock, both metallic. Look plastic but I asked in store and they can be sharpened. Loved No7 but no stock, just testers.

If you can't twist up or push up then you will be able to sharpen it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/01/2024 16:31

That will teach me to RTFT!

LadyEloise1 · 22/01/2024 08:32

I bought a Pixi Silky eye pencil after seeing them recommended on Mumsnet. Lovely texture.
