Off to Australia in 2 weeks... what do I need?

I've been before but not in summer. I'm very low maintenance, but also don't go on holiday often. There for 15 days to see my son who met and married a lovely Aussie and has moved to live there permanently :)

I thought leggings and trainers and a long shirt for travel and flipflops for daily wear... but what else?
Not likely to be going anywhere 'posh' but maybe a couple of meals out, but son't posess any dresses other than 'going to a wedding' ones! I have time to order a few bits if needed!

Basically what would you take for a couple of weeks ?

Which part of Australia? The climate varies drastically

MermaidMummy06 · 20/01/2024 10:41

Where in Australia? It makes a difference. Tassie is colder than QLD!

Basically casual shorts, dresses, sandals. I'm not a huge fan of thongs. Comfortable and cool.

A light jacket because it can still cold quickly, even in summer. Not UK cold, but cool.

Unless in a swanky area smart casual works for restaurants.

A wide brimmed hat.

Don't stress too much - the shops here have suitable clothes & clearance sales are starting!

Sorry! Adelaide!!

Anything you'd wear for a good/hot summer in the UK!

Don't forget sunscreen and a hat

SunRainStorm · 20/01/2024 23:16

Adelaide can be incredibly hot in late summer.

I'd bring a wide brimmed hat and light linen clothes.

Some amazing wineries and landscape not far from Adelaide- so something casual but nice would be good.

I wouldn't buy it in the UK though, it will be easy enough to get once you are there or order ahead.

If you go on Target online, you could order some less expensive linen blend clothing to your son's house. It's free returns if it doesn't fit.

Adelaide is a small town, and IMO not the most exciting place to visit. I'd be planning some day trips to the wine region if you can. If you have more time I think there are direct flights to Uluru from Adelaide as well.

Lucky you!

Definitely don’t buy anything here. (UK.) Australian Summer clothes are so much better than ours - wait till you get there. (And you could of course order ahead as @SunRainStorm suggests, if you’re fairly sure of sizing.)

Weather's been a bit funny lately... some stinking hot days, and some cool and rainy days. And some stinking hot and rainy days 😆

GPMK · 21/01/2024 04:55

Shorts, light tops and light dresses, preferably cotton are best for Adelaide at this time of year. It usually is really hot once school goes back.

Sandals will be useful too if you intend to go to pubs or nice restaurants or the casino as many places have a dress code including “no thongs” which is what the Aussies call flip flops.

A wide brimmed hat and sunblock will be essential too.

Have a great time!

Swimwear (a rash top), sandals, flip flops, and then a selection of clothing you'd wear in 23-40 degrees as that's what's happening in ADL right now. Don't overpack - clothes dry super fast at the moment. Good swimwear, sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat are the essentials. One light Cardi / denim jacket or similar for evenings on cooler days.

Porridgeislife · 21/01/2024 05:04

Big hat, very light dresses (no lining!), good sunglasses.

Get yourself some Cancer Council sunscreen from the supermarket (Woolworths/Coles) as soon as you arrive and wear it religiously.

A lot of what is sold in the UK as summer clothing is too hot for Australia. I’ve just returned from 4 weeks there and I ended up wearing shorts and a cotton shirt with rolled up sleeves most days. I had Birkenstocks and a pair of nice sandals for shoes.

Take a denim jacket or similar for wet days.

Unless you’ve got access & time for a good iron skip the linen. You’ll be a crumpled mess. I stayed with my parents with access to everything & it was still a faff to keep on top of.

T shirt dresses , shorts and T shirts. Thongs, sandals and a pair of walking shoes.
Swim wear and rash vest. Wide leg pants for cooler days.
A good hat. Buy reef safe sun screen here.
Denim jacket or similar for cooler weather. Pack what you already have and buy the rest here.
Suggest trip to southern vale’s wine region. Port Noarlunga to snorkel the reef, Port Willunga for lunch at star of Greece. Enjoy your stay.

As they say in Oz, “If you’ve got a head, you need a hat”. Sturdy shoes for walking outside the city (for protection from snakes) insect repellant can be useful. Also bikini or a swimsuit.

l always take summer dresses and if you need to stock up on summer clothes, most major airports sell summer things when you get airside.

Remember, that you are not going to the back of beyond and anything you find you need you can get when you arrive. As in the UK, a significant proportion of clothes on sale will have a “Made in China” label.
