Dyeing over salon highlights

I currently have blonde highlights in my hair done at the hairdressers (last done in November so I have a couple of inches of roots). My hair is naturally mid-dirty blonde but with increasing greys at the roots. Unfortunately I can no longer afford salon highlights so want to start dyeing it myself at home to cover the greys. My concern is can I use home dye over salon highlights? If so what's the best approach? Please no-one tell me to go to a hairdressers - if I could afford that I would but unfortunately I can't. Thanks

You might be one of the lucky ones for whom box dye works well, but it's unlikely. I've tried so many times to make my whole head dirty blonde to stretch appointments or to grow my highlights out, but it always turns reddy brown, regardless of the picture on the box.

You could try shrine drops, you mix it with your hair conditioner. Top tip, use at least double the amount they say and leave it on twice as long. They sell it in superdrug.

The only true answer is to actually grow it out, or strike very lucky.

@MorrisZapp I've never heard of shrine drops. Off to Google now...

Do you have a college nearby? My dd got balayage for a fiver and it wasn't even a student but a qualified heardresser brushing up on skills

I've dyed over blonde before - just left the dye on the blonder bits longer - but I have auburn tones in my hair which I think makes it easier as it doesn't go green and any reddyness looks natural.

I have done it several times over the years. You have to be very careful to choose a dark ash blonde with no gold in it or your hair will come out a bit reddish. Do the roots first, then the already highlighted section. I actually find that if you've already got highlights, the overall effect is even better than it would have been - it gives you different shades of blonde throughout, which tend to look more natural.
