Yoga clothing, what works, large size…

I’m not fussing about looking big, I know no one cares, but I’d like to feel good and treat myself. I have never tried yoga before.

I quite fancy loose trousers in cotton or bamboo, trying to find some on tight budget. A couple of questions….

Assume I need a T-shirt that won’t flop down when I bend over. Any other practical considerations?

i have a super strong support sports bra. Thinking a cotton stretchy crop top style bra would be more comfortable. I assume it doesn’t need to be particularly supportive? Is no leaping around!

I got some nice bits from NEXT including a really light weight loose long sleeved top thats been lovely.

Greekrunner · 15/01/2024 18:49

I wear running gear, leggings and a fitted top. The more lycra control the better.

The trouble with loose things is that they flop when you're upside down and you end up with your face inside your tshirt and your trousers round your waist😆

WeRateSquirrels · 15/01/2024 18:53

A looser top is fine as long as it’s fitted at the hip to keep it in place when upside down. I wear leggings or loose trousers, but the loose ones are cuffed. Can’t comment on the bra as I’m not blessed in that department!

@Greekrunner I have a serene hippy image of me relaxing in a cream/beige floaty bamboo ensemble 😀

ill check out Next thanks @LivingDeadGirlUK

Leggings or loose trousers are fine, I would stick with a sports bra though, I would choose a fitted top that won't rude up then put a loose t shirt over if you want

ConflictedCheetah · 15/01/2024 18:57

Problem with a loose top even over a tight one, is that it just ends up in your face when doing downward dog. So annoying.

Definitely go for a top that is tighter on hips. I love loose Yoga pants.

I buy from Bam Clothing but they're not cheap really

Doesthatmakemecrazy · 15/01/2024 19:04

Maybe I just stick with fitted T-shirts I have and buy comfortable trousers.

Try the charity shops which will likely have brought all the fitness gear out. When you have established what works and what doesn’t you can then spend on what you need for example loose trousers.

mdinbc · 15/01/2024 19:46

If you want comfy loose trousers, look for elastic ankles so they don't ride up when your feet are in the air. I wear snug clothing for yoga; leggings and fitted t.
If you are in a good class, most people won't worry about how you look, just praise you for being there!

If you are looking for some good on line classes, try Do Yoga With Me.

Layers can work well. A tight vest under a looser top so you don't find you're exposing more than you planned when you bend forward. A cropped top that stays put is better than a compression sports bra designed for high impact.
Tu at Sainsburys, M&S, and Next all do decent leggings etc.
I wouldn't spend much until you're sure you enjoy it though. You really don't need all the gear to do yoga. Jogging bottoms and a t-shirt are fine.

I once had a (male) yoga teacher who announced that women should practice bra less because the bra band constricts the chest from expanding. For the flat chested, I would agree. But I am very well endowed, and if I went bra less, I'd likely knock someone out. Constriction or not, it's a tight sports bra for me!

Doesthatmakemecrazy · 15/01/2024 21:34

Thanks all.

My sports bra is extra firm/high impact so do think I need one I can move/breathe in more comfortably.

I think I would wear elastic ankle loose style trousers anyway so would like to find some.

If it was serious exercise I would just wear leggings and not care what I look like.

Sounds like T-shirts I have will be fine though. I had thought loose and comfortable would be better so I am glad I checked.

There's a a lot of head below heart in most yoga practices. You want to be able to move of course, but a stretchy top that stays around your middle section whether you are upright or upside down is the way to go, unless you do want to flash your abs. Stretchy pants or leggings or even sports shorts (so no constriction around the knees or bum) are good. And watch out for transparency when the bum area is stretched too.

JadziaD · 16/01/2024 12:12

I bought these for yoga, recommended on here I think: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0BN659VNG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I wear normal thermal leggings in winter.

I have found that a tight fitting vest, preferably long enough to tuck in is good and then I wear a looser t-shirt over that.

SmallestInTheClass · 16/01/2024 12:16

Another vote for a fitted vest with something loose on top, either vest or floaty top. Otherwise everyone behind you can see up your top when you are on all fours or in downward dog. You can always tuck a corner of you loose top into the top of your trousers when you're upside down.
