I’m in the same position OP, I’m looking for a winter coat or jacket that isn’t a puffer (got one).

I like wool but oversized/unfitted wool coats drown me and the belted/fitted ones look officey to me and don’t work with jeans which is what I live in.

I’m looking at shearling too but I think the nice stuff is very expensive.

and a faff to maintain too

I've got a shearling coat, for when I visit my family in the Alps, but I only wear it a handful of times a year in the UK because it's too warm. And I'm someone who tends to feel the cold. It would not have been a good investment if I only needed it in this country. I live the south of the UK, though - would probably be different in the north or Scotland.

WhereAreWeNow · 13/01/2024 09:57

I actually think now is a great time to look for coats. They're all on sale. There just don't seem to be many great styles around this year.
Have you tried Mango and Zara @TurquoiseTurtoise ?@TurquoiseTurtoise ?

Zara have some nice mostly wool coats in their new collection. Worth trying on in store if you can as sizes can be a bit crazy. This one's nice and not oversized. https://www.zara.com/uk/en/zw-collection-manteco-wool-blend-fitted-coat-p08089761.html?v1=316178038&v2=2352649

Arket have some nice coats with 40% off. I was about to give up for another year but found one yesterday. I do think it can stay cold in this country until April (it did last year). So if you can find a nice one in the sales…

CallHerGreen · 13/01/2024 10:35

Cos is not going to be your friend if you don't like oversized! & Other stories has some belted coats that look promising.

Yes and returned coats from them
I think I need to go a size down because it seems like they are all extra oversized this sesson

Brand Alley?

MissSookieStackhouse · 13/01/2024 11:32

For charity shop bargains, get thee to the Home Counties, London folk! 😀

I live in Berkshire, my mother lives in Surrey/Kent borders and there’s great stuff out that way too! Market towns and upmarket villages in quaint areas are where to look. 😉

FayCarew · 13/01/2024 11:54

@MissSookieStackhouse , agree but some towns have outlet style shops too.
The towns along the Thames are pretty good but tend not to be dirt cheap.

Posh little towns and villages are usually good. I used to work in that part of Hampshire near Berkshire and Surrey and got a few lovely things.

Delatron · 13/01/2024 12:29

I feel your pain though - I’ve been looking for a very long time. Every coat is oversized- I know it’s the fashion but they drown me and I don’t like the look. There needs to be more choice! I ended up sizing down - bought a size 6 and it’s still a bit oversized on me!

Teledeluxe · 13/01/2024 12:59

The problem with “sales” is that they’re selling stuff they couldn’t sell before.

MillicentRogers · 13/01/2024 13:23

Looks like a football manager would wear many decades ago.

BaronessBomburst · 13/01/2024 14:24

I've just ordered the Sadie coat from Monsoon. I appreciate it's not the look that you're going for, but it's the first new coat I've had in twenty years so I'm excited!

Lemonfoxtrot · 13/01/2024 14:31

@MissSookieStackhouse thanks for the tip! That’s my weekends sorted for next few weeks! 😂

Newgirls · 13/01/2024 14:32

Loads of wool coats under £100 still for sale in John Lewis and Zara. Marks & S had loads too.
