Dh and I are having a weekend in London next month, we are going to the theatre on our first evening. It's been years since I've been the theatre what do I wear!??
Should I dress up or is it very casual these days??

I'm a Londoner, go to the theatre often, always jeans and trainers / boots. I don't notice what anyone else is wearing and don't expect them to notice me either. I'm just there to see a show.

I think it's nice to dress up a little and respectful to the actors etc. May be old fashioned lol.

Layers are good as it can be variable temp wise, i also bring a bag with a zip that can be shoved under the seat as you will be getting up and down a lot. 😁

The actors couldn't give a shiny shite what the audience are wearing. They just don't want you using your phone

OP most people go casual

Wow thank you everyone for all your replies 😃 😊
I think I'm going to go for black wide leg trousers and a stripey silk shirt. Depending on the weather I might wear trainers or heels xx

As others have said 'anything goes'. About 2 weeks ago, I went to a ballet south of London by about an hour - big university city full of people who might commute to the Big Smoke - and people were wearing all kinds of clothes: some dressed for an evening occasion some resolutely wearing their scruffies. So many people in England are loath to go more than one step past pyjamas.

I'd say agree a style/level of formality with your DP. e.g. if he's wearing jeans, you might too but if he's wearing a jacket/suit and tie you might go for a smart dress.

We went last night and, as others have said, anything goes. We saw people wearing everything from old hoodies to nice dresses. The majority were jeans and a jumper casual. Enjoy!

I just love getting dressed up but do have a fear of being overdressed!!
