Learning make up

Turning 40 this year has got me thinking a lot about life.

Sounds really stupid but I feel like I don't really know how to put make up on properly. My mum did wear make up but wasn't interested in teaching or sharing with me.

I really want help but don't know where to start and also feel really embarrassed that I don't know what I'm doing.

How do the make up counters in department stores work do you just turn up? Would they teach me?

Make up is a bit big. Start smaller.

I’d start with one or two item and work on from there.

What do you want to enhance or hide? That’s a good starting point.

I’m a redhead.
I need eyeliner or mascara as I have very pale lashes. A warm lipstick as I have grey blue lips. These two things make a massive difference! With age I’ve found I also need eyebrow definition as mine have gone greyer.

Skin hasn’t been a problem, but mid fifties I find a little concealer and a very light cream/powder foundation gives an evenness I didn’t lack before.

Does that help at all, as a starting point?

Re make up counters, you book an appointment and usually buy something as a result. No7 do good sessions you can book online. They do eye sessions, or skin, or lip if I remember correctly.

You tube is your friend here. Wayne Goss has some simple tutorials.

Use TikTok much better than make up counters.

Follow @katiejanehughes on insta. Great for skin prep and actual makeup.

If there was anyway to contact you I would happily help you with basic make up techniques. I've recently helped my older sister on this too!

I would recommend having a primer (helps hide pores and you have a more smooth finish)

Beauty sponge (make sure it's damp) and apply foundation with it by dabbing not sweeping.

YouTube is a great place and has taught me so much as well.

Hope this helps

Ask a tween if you know one. They seem to know it ALL and are pretty good at it.

The right shade foundation is a must aswell as finding your undertones and your skin type.
Have a Google and decide for yourself what undertones and skin type you have.

Also look up your face shape and how/where to apply contour, concealer and blush. Its dependant on face shape.

Your foundation colour and formula may change between summer and winter.

Less is more. Whether that’s daily makeup or going out. Most are buildable so start with a little and go from there.

While doing your makeup, regularly step back from the mirror. What you see up close is not what people will see when having a conversation to your face.

Decent makeup brushes; try applying your foundation with a damp beauty blender and some brushes. You might find either or works best for you.
