Please rescue me from my awful hair

My hair is crap. Crap 'style' and crap texture. The only thing I like about it is the colour. I feel like it's impossible to do anything with it. It's frizzy and 'floaty' - when it's down, it seems to float around and stick up everywhere. I think it's more wavy than curly but I don't really know because it has a different amount of curl to it after every wash, even though I wash it the same way. I've used a lot of different shampoos and conditioners over time but never really get any good results so I just use normal Tresamme for dry hair (forget the exact name of it). I have to let it air dry as it becomes really puffy and wild if I use a hairdryer, and it seems to be fairly resistant to straighteners as it never stays straight for more than about an hour! I feel at a loss with it, I wear it in a pony all the time so that it looks a bit neater but it never looks good. It's shoulder length atm, anything longer than that is not very flattering. I would like to have it shorter but I feel like it will just look like cotton wool on my head??

It probs doesn't help that I've not been to the hairdressers for almost 4 years now. Stopped due to Covid but they never seemed to know what to do with it either, so I've had a friend cut it and it's not perfect but it's fine as I wear it up. But I feel like my hair makes me look unprofessional and people don't take me seriously so I want to sort it out! Thank you!

Gosh your hair is absolutely gorgeous even like this.

Curly girl method will help you learn to look after it to optimise health and learn how to get more predictable results. Lots of online groups, some more strict than others.

Haircuts are helpful but learn a bit first before you go. I say this because curly trained hairdressers are rare and tend to be extremely expensive. Normal hair dressers can be well meaning but liable to take thinning scissors to hair like this which really won't help.

You have some fabulous hair there waiting to be revealed, that people would kill for! Do some investigation into curly hair, here's a website that might get you started, I think you could find there's something a bit like this in terms of curl pattery hidden in there. There is heaps of (often confusing) info out there, but it's about finding something that works for you.

I have very similar hair Op
Looks like the issue is that it's part wavy , part straight.
Curly girl method didn't work for me, it just looked worse, straight with curly bits 😂

Regular cuts, mid length and a massive amount of styling product /tools works for me.
I wash every 3 days or it goes WILD!
Your hair looks porous -try Matrix Miracle Creator-my hair drinks this.

I have similarly thick wavy hair which tends to dryness.

Ditch Tresemme and don’t go near Aussie Hair.

You need:

  • Loreal Absolut Repair shampoo + conditioner (cheaper on eBay)
  • John Frieda Frizz Ease to be applied when wet
  • Hair moisturising mask - Garnier Ultimate Blends Hair Food is one of the best value. Loreal Absolut Repair do a more expensive version.

The best hair stuff I have found is Kerastase but it’s very expensive.

But the other thing is with this kind of hair you must have it cut regularly to keep it under control. Every 6 weeks.

badhair247 · 08/01/2024 13:17

Thanks everyone for your advice. I never knew how bad Tresemme was! I haven't been to the shops yet but I'm going to look for travel sized shampoos so I can try different ones without too much waste. I do dry my hair with a soft microfibre towel but usually I rub it quite vigorously, so yesterday I tried just gently patting it. Today I woke up with straight frizzy hair on one side and curly frizzy hair on the other 😂I think it's going to be a lot of trial and error but definitely time to change shampoo and get a real hairdresser!

you have absolutely glorious hair!! that is my favourite colour for hair and would love to have my own hair that colour.

you definitely need to visit a good hair dresser. I love francesco academy as they give great hair care advise too.

in the meantime, consider upgrading your hair dryer. investing in something like kerastase hair products - worth every penny. also hair oil - the rose hair oil by kerastase is awesome. also their lotion thermique to protect your hair while blow drying.

I have real hair envy - mine's straight and lacks volume. I'd love a bit of shape and movement like you have.

You'll have to come back with a couple of 'after' photos when you've found products you like 🙂

You’re basically living an 80s life without Frizzease.

Wow I actually thought that was a photo of me from behind. We have very similar hair, and hair problems. Mine looks better with a hairdresser who's cut lots of layers in . It is curly/wavy now, so still looks a bit messy in my opinion, but better than a triangle of frizz.
I like the garnier hair food conditioner for moisture.

Would love to know what has worked for you.
