Where to find cheap headscarves?

Scarfsearch · 06/01/2024 11:14

I wear a headscarf for non-religious reasons (patchy hair loss) and tie it behind my head rather than under the chin.

I bought several black headscarves from Primark at the end of last summer but when I went back to stock up, they'd been discontinued.

Those were good because they were not too large or too small. Too large and it becomes hard to tie and a bit bothersome, too small is obviously problematic. They were also only a few pounds!

Does anyone know of a good source of plain headscarves in neutral colours like black, brown or beige in a good size for tying? The cheaper, the better really as they don't seem to last.

Thanks in advance.

Have you looked on Amazon?

StrangeNew · 06/01/2024 12:12

TK Maxx almost certainly has an inexhaustible supply.

But are you sure the cause of their not lasting long isn’t that you’re buying the cheapest available? A good silk or cotton or linen scarf should surely last years worn on clean hair.

BTW - as a variation on the headscarf I know someone (who needs to keep their head warm) who wears very lovely and soft cashmere turbans from here:

Rosie Sugden

There’s a sale on at the moment - or perhaps a generous person might give you one for your next birthday or Christmas? Last forever apparently.

Bring a vintage sensibility to contemporary looks with this hand-knitted turban, which comes in a variety of colours to keep you stylishly warm this season. It’s knitted in a ribbed stitch to allow stretch and “give” whilst simultaneously allowing for...

That was my first thought too. Of course it won’t last long if it’s from Primark.

I would buy a few better quality ones - agree get natural materials - and hope they last longer.

What shape do you want? Because it is so easy to make your own as they only need to be big squares or rectangles and that might get better quality for less money, if you have a machine to do the hem.

Scarfsearch · 06/01/2024 12:22

Thanks but TK Maxx scarves are about 15 pounds for manmade materials and 40+ for natural. Plus they are the wrong size to be worn as headscarves, far too big (unless worn in a religious, front tied style which obviously I'm not going to do).

I did have natural ones at first and no, they didn't last and cost an awful lot of money.

The turban wouldn't cover my hair and it's not a look I'd go for, but thanks anyway.

TBH I'd appreciate replies from headscarf wearers because it's so specific that you don't really get it until you've worn one.

Like, the need to cover all the hair and not suggesting things that cost more than 50 pounds when one needs to buy ten or twelve of them.

Deresina on Amazon had some lovely scarves of various sizes which I used when having chemo. Their square ones gave a good coverage and lots of extra for tying .
Fairygate on Amazon look similar but I have not used them. They are man made fibres.

I find that market stalls do the best variation of head scarves. Lots of choice of fabrics and sizes as well as colours and prints.
Where abouts in the country are you?

Thanks, this is a good point. I'm going to London next week, I might check out a market there.

Edited

I do wear them sometimes but I don't know precisely what type you want, it might help if you gave some more details.

Grin I come from generations of headscarf wearers - so was only offering what works for us.

Hope you find what you’re looking for, @Scarfsearch.

WrinklesShminkles · 06/01/2024 13:16

Perhaps you could measure the scarves that work for you so people can suggest some of the right size? I'd like to know too as my hair is thinning now! Sad

Mabelface · 06/01/2024 13:21

I get all mine from charity shops. 70x70cm seems to be the optimum size for my head.

Vicliz24 · 06/01/2024 13:23

Charity shops have so many scarves. Often vintage and unique.

anothernamechangeagainsndagain · 06/01/2024 13:38

Look in charity shops, especially any connected to cancer charities or hospices, we have so many donated in exactly the size you need

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 06/01/2024 13:55

In what way do they not last? Even if you were washing them after every wear why wouldn't they last as long as a blouse or shirt?
