Gym bag help please - exacting requirements!

I'm looking to replace my gym bag and can't find anything which matches my requirements:

  • hold-all style
  • rectangular in shape (not barrel or tapered at the ends)
  • black (preferably matt)
  • no obvious logos/branding
  • hand and shoulder strap
  • some (not many) pockets (for keys, phone, headphones so small in size - I use packing bags for swim / gym gear, toiletries, clothes etc).
  • reasonably big size (about 50cm length)

Rains or Stutterheim would fit the bill had it not been for the pocket requirement. I'd like something that will last - it will get thrown about.

Budget - up to £130, although if less then fabulous.

I'm finding myself going backwards with this one and wondering whether I should go Rains / Stutterheim and get a little 'valuables' pouch for the stuff I'd ideally like to keep in a pocket - but this feels like a compromise.

Any links or brand recommendations appreciated (I've tried the usual suspects of SB, Nike, Adidas etc)!

I really like the new balance duffle. Perfect size.

Thank you so much, everyone - I am checking out every link! A lot of lovely bags have been shared.

In terms of pockets and size, the Nike Utility and (larger) Gymshark ones are perfect. However, I'd prefer a stronger outdoorsy material - such as the Helly Hanson, Patagonia, Rab, Mountain Equipment, TNF. It really will take a battering and I'd like not to replace for many, many years. Unfortunately, those models are often lacking on pockets.

Through this, I've realised that durability of material and some pockets are my most important criteria. Which takes me to:

  • The North Face Yoyeger
  • Patagonia Black Hole
  • Rab (I could forgive it being dark red,as comes with healthy discount)
  • possibly - Away F.A.R (however, I'm unsure about the durability here, not familiar with this brand as I am with the above).

I've got a few of the outdoors type bags. Warning! They stink really easily. They're designed to be waterproof so anything damp or slightly smelly won't breathe or dry. I use them for diving, swimming and sailing.

I've got the Osprey one that I use as a cabin bag too. After 10 years it's looking quite tatty, but it's been through the hold, cycle camping, hiking, sailing, kicked around train stations etc. I've got Northface, Mountain Equpiment and Decathlon versions too. They're all much of a muchness. I would actually go with a cheaper sports one with vents because the outdoors ones are really heavy, don't dry and don't wear that much better. You really don't need something that engineered for going to the gym

I was very picky about what i wanted in a gym bag. I finally found this one. You can get quite a bit of stuff in it. I carry spare trainers, 2 towels, water bottle, wash bag, toiletries bag and a change of clothes, and there's still room left.

The side pocket is ideal for wet/dirty clothes and the little zip pocket on the other side is great for my membership card and keys.

I'd also checked out Osprey - my mountain backpack is from them and takes a lot of abuse in all weathers. However, their non rucksacks looked a wee bit too luggagy (if that's a thing).

I've never found my tough outdoor bags smell - and I have a few for different types of sports / adventures. Admittedly, they don't look like new,l after many years on the coast/in bothy's/expeditions - however, they are all reliable, no holes, zips working and not letting water in after years and years of relentless abuse and elements being thrown at them.

The gym bag will be used 7 days a week, sometimes twice daily, indoors and outdoors - hence durability is important. I don't want to be replacing it in the next decade, but know it won't look as new (possibly after a month!).

Anyway, the search has ended! Ortleib - perfect size, fits durability and no(t too) obvious logos/branding. One external pocket and two internals. I've compromised on strap.

Also found an Eagle Creek one which also looks to fit requirements (in case anyone is looking for themselves).

Thank you everyone for your input and help Flowers

Eagle creek is fab. I’ve had an EC toiletry bag (obviously takes less abuse than an exercise bag) for about 22 years.

camping, backpacking etc: everything - including the zippers - still works.
