I have NO idea how to dress for the 2020s and feel very self conscious when out in public - please send help!

To be fair, if you’re dressed for the 90s you’re bang on trend!

Helpmeimold · 05/01/2024 20:31

I think it only counts if you didn't live through that decade though 😁

Well not quite. You can take Elements and adopt them. So a kick flare but with a tucked in knit.
A baggy trouser with a bright adidas trainer ... that sort of thing

Helpmeimold · 05/01/2024 20:37

Thank you for the suggestions @piscofrisco but I had to google half those things - so clueless.

I hope someone will help you soon, but perhaps it would help if you could give a little more information about yourself and what you are looking for.
I'm guessing if you feel stuck in the 90s you are in your 40s or 50s? Do you spend most of your time at home with family or live in the middle of the countryside surrounded by mud? That seems to be the usual reasons people have taken their eye off the fashion zeitgeist.

Are you after clothes for work or for down time?
What do you like wearing? Do you want to look smart and chic or cutting edge trendy or do you just want some ideas for a nice outfit to wear out for a pub lunch?

Skidmarink · 05/01/2024 23:16

It helps me a lot to look at what influencers are wearing, particularly those in my own age group (40s). I lived through the 90s but I’m still wearing 90s style clothes now and feeling good in them. In fact some of the stuff I’m wearing is actually stuff I bought in the 90s!

Thanks 🙂In my 40s, self employed and living rurally. Normal "uniform" is jeans, a t shirt, a jumper (usually fleece) and boots. Don't generally go out, out anymore but bar wear is basically jeans, a nice top and some fancy earrings. Instead of heels I wear non descript trainers.

Feeling a bit lost at the minute as the last time I really recognised/ kept up with fashion was circa 2007. Watched Gok Wan's How to Look Good Naked and wore A line dresses with a big belt and heels, but haven't really moved on since. Each decade before then seemed to have much more of a defined style than today.

Go onto Asos, and check the best selling items, that ll give you an idea of what's on trend.

Doc Martins, tights, black skirt and top seem to be popular.

Loose jeans, t shirt and oversized camal /grey coat. With white trainers and a cross over bag.

Helpmeimold · 06/01/2024 16:17

I'll check them out @CreationNat1on
How do you find a style that fits? Is it colour, personality, boy shape, age range or a bit of everything?

OP posts:
Helpmeimold · 06/01/2024 16:17

Body shape, not boy shape 😄

Wears my money is a fashion blog - she is also on Instagram. Her style is quite casual and might fit well with your lifestyle. This post might give you some outfit ideas.

Keep living in the 90s.
If everyone did this we never would have lost it.

LoreleiG · 06/01/2024 16:43

You wear what I wear, so I can’t help but following!

Bluearrivabus · 06/01/2024 17:21

Have a look at what the kids are wearing, and make it more grown up is what I do! Eg my kids wear massive white trainers with big white socks over leggings, or baggy jeans and then tiny tops if going out (reminiscent of the All Saints girls) or giant hoodies if lounging at home. At the moment cropped, wider jumpers seem to be a thing. I get lots of stuff on Vinted (big fan of &otherstories stuff on there) so you can afford to make mistakes if something doesn’t quite work.

I’m in my 40s too, & don’t want to dress exactly like a teenager, but will steal the silhouette eg the big trainers but not the giant socks, or looser jeans but then a longer, fitted top for going out instead of their crop tops (no-one needs to see me in a crop top!) Slouchy nice jumpers instead of slouchy hoodies and so on. Does that make sense? If you have teen girls around they will help you! It’s not what they would wear, but they will give it a seal of approval so I don’t look like I’m still dressing like someone from Hear’say.

As a PP said , 90's are bang on trend, according to my 17 year old who came in with very 90s sodden flared jeans after being caught in the rain! Also black cherry lipstick and dark eyeshadow, pale face, glitter (too much?) !
