Warm but elegant coat

I'm on the hunt for a warm coat that looks smart and even feminine for work and travelling. Ideally knee-length and waisted - I am mid 40s, size 12 and an hourglass (well, probably more like a pear nowadays!). Budget around £200 -£300 I guess - could go up for something excellent. The last coats I had which I really liked were both with quirky colours and details - a purple on with balloon sleeves from Coast and an anyone with red piping from Hobbs. Sadly both very tired and thinning now.

Where would you look? I went through John Lewis earlier and everything seemed so thin and measly!

I ordered the Seamstress of Bloomsbury one hoping to sort out all my coat problems. It looks lovely but only comes as S, M and L. The M is a 12-14 but was too big in the upper body for me as a 12. Sadly I had to send it back. It was a shame because it’s a gorgeous design and it’s 100% wool.

I have this .It's not warm like a down coat (I am always hot so can only wear them with a t shirt underneath )but it keeps the wind and rain out and is really beautifully made.

Just waiting for a second one in cornflower blue to arrive .

I thought elegant raincoats didn't exist! Have just ordered from rainsisters, they look beautiful.

I think that Ted Baker looks very sleek but... cold and thin! Is it genuinely warm? Warmer than or equivalent to a duvet coat?

TBH I’ve never found a wool coat (even my vintage 100% very heavy wool coats) to be as warm as a proper duvet coat but I’ve been to some quite chilly places with my Ted Baker ones (Austria in the winter for example) and when layered with a jumper, scarf, hat etc it’s been absolutely fine. Sounded like you wanted it for work/travelling so would be mostly inside or on/off public transport which mine is more than warm enough for - if you’re wanting warmth as the number one priority then maybe look at a duvet coat style rather than wool?

I had a lovely heavy fitted wood coat from Reiss that was super warm. Current one is from John Lewis and that is not quite as warm but still fine for days like these with a big wool scarf.

I would highly recommend a wool Ted Baker coat like this one. Wool has been my best friend this winter (brr).

I second this - love the Ted Baker wrap coat, have one in teal and one in black
perfect for all occasions

Hobbs have some gorgeous wool coats and can get delivered to store to try on.

I'd look on ebay or In a charity shop to find something of quality. Or go to selfridges
