UV sonic dental cleaners/pods

Hi, not sure this is the best place to ask, but Search has come up with nothing and it's kinda to do with Beauty :)

Does anyone have any experience of these ultrasonic, UV dental pods, for cleaning retainers and mouth guards etc? I keep being served Instagram ads for Zima dental pod and the like, even the cheapest ones are quite pricey for me especially not knowing if they're actually effective!

I wear a night guard retainer and after a couple of weeks it starts to go yellow - I use denture tabs to clean it daily, but the yellow doesn't fade :(

I've tried various suggestions for cleaning the retainer, but would like to know if anyone has used one of these pod cleavers and whether it's worth splashing out for one. TIA.

KECOOLKE Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner, 750ml Sonic Cleaner with Digital Timer for Eyeglasses, Rings, Coins, Silver, Denture Ultrasonic Cleaner Solution for Gifts amzn.eu/d/7XBZwmP

I think this (if I added the link OK) will do the same job for half the price. DH has one for cleaning other things, and I'm thinking of using it for my retainer too. Worth checking that the specifications are similar to those of the Zima pod.

It's brilliant on glasses and jewellery by the way 😀

I have one and it did work well on my plastic mouthguard, yes.

My mouth guard always seems minging, I’d never thought of something like this!

CouldYouReallyBeArsed · 02/01/2024 17:46

Do you have a Zima one, or the one on the Amazon link @athingofbeauty ?

Isabelle70 · 02/01/2024 23:40

I have an Ultrasonic like the Amazon one linked, cost me about £30 and I use it for jewellery and my glasses. My DS has been know to put Vape bits in it too.

Ultrasonics are good , but if your mouth guard is going bright yellow , do you have problems with indigestion? It might be a problem with acid reflux.

SalGoodwoman · 03/01/2024 12:47

Thanks for the replies and link. I've considered getting a cleaner for jewellery, to also use for my retainer, but they seem quite big and I've got limited space in the bathroom.

I thought the specialist dental ones would be small enough to just have on my bathroom counter and not take up too much space - presumably you would use it everyday for retainers? So you'd need it out all the time.

Don't think I have acid reflux, just weird mouth bacteria?! Dentist claims the retainer only needs a rinse to keep clean and white/clear - mine have always gone yellow after a few weeks :(

There are not any mouth bacteria that cause retainers to go yellow. The main causes are
eating a lot of foods or tablets containing turmeric
tartar or plaque building up due to not brushing inside appliances with tooth brush
acid reflux, vomiting and gastric juices staining

I got a £30 one on Amazon. Can't compare to the Zima one but seems to do the job. There is a cloudy part on the retainer that it hasn't removed, but had been using the retainer over a year before I invested so I should probably order a new retainer and maintain that.

RunnyPaint · 03/01/2024 20:24

Ours is mains operated, so we can't use it in the bathroom. Are the Zima ones powered through a shaver socket?

Regarding cleaning the retainer, I was told to brush mine like I do my teeth. I've only had it a month, so it still looks fine. We also have fairly soft water, so that may make a difference too?

Could you please link to the one you got, if you'd recommend it?

I think the specific dental ones I've seen say they charge via USB and not mains, I guess also would not charge in the shaving socket.

I've looked at jewellery cleaning ones too, but there's too much choice!! :/
