Walkers amongst us- please recommend some trainers

So - Christmas /birthday to spend. I would like some trainers which are more geared towards distance walking, mainly footpaths, but some parks. I've only ever had general supermarket trainers up to now, and after about 4 miles my feet hurt.

So - what would you buy? Looking to spend up to £80, perhaps a bit more for the right fit, but overwhelmed by the amount of choice out there? Skechers? NIke?

You'd be better off getting proper walking shoes from the likes of go outdoors etc

aSwarmOfMidgies · 01/01/2024 14:54

Proper fitting important

Good tred on sole - vibram sole for example
I like a squared off heel for grip on decents

Are your feet wide / narrow / in between ?

Think my last pair cost over £100 , I do walk a lot so they won't last more than a year or 18 months

Cotswolds used to be best for good value for money and competant staff

I like Brooks, I buy the road running shoes and just walk in them.
I also have Sketchers, I like them but they are quite as comfy or good with the outdoors.
The NIKE I have are a lot more stylish and a lot less comfortable and not outdoors shoes.

Hopefully you can find a decent pair of walking trainers/shoes in the sale I really rate Ecco and Geox - I find them comfortable from the first wear. I would look for something waterproof/gore-tex if possible if you're in the UK, makes such a difference.

Go to a running shop or Cotswold Outdoors and get a free gait analysis.
They'll recommend a shoe type and some shoes to try on.
You can shop around when you know what you are looking for.

Adidas terrex are my go to

Tatumm · 01/01/2024 15:01

All good suggestions. Definitely go to an outdoor shop and try lots on. The most expensive won’t necessarily be the best fit for your feet. It’s one situation where buying online doesn’t work so well because the fit is so different between brands.

MerryChristmasToYou · 01/01/2024 15:02

I've always liked Asics and NB and find them comfortable. As running shoes, Saucony seem to last andf last.

The gait analysis will spot if you land unevenly on your foot. Take your old trainers with you.

If you walk a lot (or run) add a half size to your usual size.
Nike and Adidas tend to run small IME and the shoes aren't all that comfortable.

New Balance do two width fittings. Narrow and wide/regular.

I've got some similar to these. They've done a moonwalk and miles and miles of training leading up to it. They've walked paths, hills, mountains, fields and all sorts!

They've been brilliant and being fabric, were comfy from day 1. I bought them at an ASICS outlet place in a mcarthur glen and had them at a really reasonable price. The staff there helped me choose what was right for my need.

Noneofourbusiness · 01/01/2024 15:12

I would recommend Sketchers. I find them really comfortable for walking. I walk up hills/through forests etc. They are really robust.

MerryChristmasToYou · 01/01/2024 15:44

Mine are Asics GT-2000 gore-tex
I have hiking boots for proper hikes but would be happy to set off for a 15 mile walk in the Asics

MerryChristmasToYou · 01/01/2024 15:48

A friend who works in retail and standing or walking all day always wears Skechers

RomeoandJomeo · 01/01/2024 15:51

I'm currently using goretex trail running shoes that I got from decathlon for about £70 as my footwear of choice on most walks - which are typically very hilly and muddy. They are very comfy, have excellent grip and are much lighter than waking shoes I've had in the past.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/01/2024 15:53

Mine are Adidas, waterproof.

Much prefer trainers over walking boots.

Copperoliverbear · 01/01/2024 15:54

Merrell

DisforDarkChocolate · 01/01/2024 15:55

I like my New Balance for that sort of walk. I'll definitely be replacing them with something similar. Mine were from M&M or Sports Pursuit. Probably last year's model.
