M&S sale am I missing something?

Stumpedasatree · 01/01/2024 14:02

M&S are advertising their sale. I have the app and am browsing for example, Goodmove range. Click on anything reduced, but then it’s all out of stock in the colours that are reduced by 50% and all colours available are full price. I can’t find anything actually reduced! If out of stock why are they even advertising the reduction? Such a waste of time unless I’m doing something wrong?

and the delivery is rubbish too. I ordered a dress online on Boxing Day and it’s still not been despatched. Suspect I’ll get an email soon telling me my order can’t be fulfilled.

The 'sales' are a lie.

Inclined to agree.

TerfTalking · 01/01/2024 16:28

I ordered on 27th at around 6am online but at 9:30 I went into our large out of town branch and I have to say the discounts were absolutely fantastic, the things I bought had well over 50% off. Sixty quid trainers for £21, black long coat from 70 to 26, £28 sleep hoody thing down to £8.50. Everyone’s trolleys were piled high, I was not disappointed.

Zero point looking at the sales on 1st Jan IMO.

It's also likely that there will be lots of returns, I know I ordered different sizes and styles for choice and won't keep everything. It's worth setting up the stock notifications if there's something specific you've got your eye on.

I'm hoping the coat I have my eye on will come back in in my size but there doesn't seem to be any way to set up a stock notification, it's so frustrating.
I just keep refreshing the page in vain.

Petrine · 01/01/2024 16:40

I was lucky and bought a beautiful Jaeger coat half price. I was so pleased as I had been debating whether to buy when it was full price.

I find that the M&S sizes are always missing in mid size range. So there will be lots of the big sizes but nothing in size 10 to 14. It’s not just during the sales, it seems to be the same throughout the year. Surely their stock control should flag up the amount of stock needed in each size.

Oh it looks like they've removed the option on sale items, that's annoying. Normally when you choose a size that's out of stock a little "notify me" button pops up.

smokingcarriageonly · 01/01/2024 16:43

I think you used to be able to check stock in stores too which has gone.

Lovethatforyouhun · 01/01/2024 16:52

The sales all started before Christmas so Jan is too late to look imho.
Jan sales, even Boxing day sales are now a thing of the past.

That said, M&S stock online is always utter shite. Their heavily advertised Christmas clothing was all sold out in anything bar size 6 or size 20 in November (e.g. Silver skirt)

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 01/01/2024 16:53

The sale had already started when I clicked on the website on Boxing Day morning and there were items on there then but they soon became out of stock, including two in my basket, but I did manage to get a dress (already delivered) that I'd seen in store. You had to be very quick and it is the same in store. Last sale, just by chance, we popped into the Camberley store and I got a few merrino jumpers, but it was already like a plaque of locust had worked their way through the racks!!

educatingrati · 01/01/2024 17:38

I looked on Christmas Eve pm, and pretty much everything in the sale was out of stock. I looked on the 23rd and the sale hadn't started. So either you have to be online the minute the sale goes on, or there is very little in the sale range online. No M & S near us. So going in store isn't an option for me.

Gunnersforthecup · 01/01/2024 18:14

We went shopping yesterday. DD got 4 T shirts for less than £40, mostly in the sale, and is very happy with them. It seemed a lot better value than the John Lewis womenswear, and nicer styles.

LumiB · 01/01/2024 18:19

I had a message the online sale started Xmas eve 7pm I logged in all out of stock apart from the extremely small sizes like size 6. I just assumed they wanted to push people to go to the store.

BeatricetheBeautious · 01/01/2024 18:26

I haven't been to a store in person, but I did get some underwear and a (mens) cotton v neck a week or so ago. There was not a lot there tbh though. Also agree that the way their site is set up so you have to click on the item to see which colour is on sale is annoying and it's always out of stock when you click on the sale colour.

I do think the sales are a bit crap this time and not just M&S. I don't need anything and am trying a low buy year. But if something I knew I'd get a lot of wear out of was on sale I would have got it.

I haven't got time to go in person, but probably for the best! Can't buy anything I don't need

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/01/2024 19:24

I went to the big M&S on Oxford St last week and got an Autograph black cashmere jumper with white stars for £54. Was very pleased.

JustExistingNotLiving · 01/01/2024 14:31

Yep, I noticed the same thing.

I couldn’t decide if they had sold everything out within a few hours if the start if the sale or if they were taking the mick.

I bought two sweatshirts on Christmas Eve which arrived last Wednesday. There was good availability in all the sale colours in my size on Christmas eve. I decided I didn’t like the colour of one & thought I’d order in a different colour. They’d gone into the sale & every sale colour was out of stock online. 🙁

thedevilinablackdress · 01/01/2024 19:32

Sportswear doesn't tend to get reduced much at this time of year as it's pushed hard in January.
I did notice in store that there wasn't a huge amount of sales stock list week. Maybe they've erred on the side of caution stock-wise after the acres of floral dresses they had in the sale a few months back.

haloeffect · 01/01/2024 19:44

I never see any clothing on sale on M&S app, only the usual offers 3 for 2 etc
Went into store on 30th or 29th cant remember exactly and saw lots on sale. Managed to grab a couple of sweaters.

tescocreditcard · 01/01/2024 19:46

Showing all the out of stock items is really irritating. John Lewis are the worst for this.

I don't fucking care what you HAVEN'T got - show me what you HAVE got.

MaryGreenhill · 01/01/2024 19:48

I did manage to buy 2 pairs of my favourite slippers at half price but l had the same experience as others here with the website and the app , no stock available and only evident after having to go around the Mulberry bush for ages .

VolvoFan · 01/01/2024 19:53

Marketing psychology. It gets people looking, and there's a hope that you'll buy something that you may not have even considered buying. It's the same when they rearrange aisles in the physical store.

Ah right, that explains a lot.

I finally learnt (within the last 5 years) NEVER to buy something I don't want just because they don't have what I DO want. Took me 45 years to learn that lesson.

Blingismything · 01/01/2024 20:08

I managed to get a duvet coat reduced from £100 to £51 in store on the 27th, also a pair of pleather leggings reduced from £25 to £8, these are very baggy on my legs so may take them back. Very little choice of sizes online as others have said.

BobnLen · 01/01/2024 20:15

I bought some M&S, some branded and some for DH on Christmas Eve morning when it started so was pleased. I did know more or less what I wanted so went straight to it, some was already in my bag. You have to be very quick likewise Next, I always manage to get first VIP slot for that

It started early morning, I checked my bag and the stuff was reduced, by the time the email comes out it's all gone

I was in one of their big stores yesterday and there wasn't much at all - some sequin things eg a blazer but only 20 pounds off. If I'm going to be persuaded to buy something for a "maybe" for next year I need more than that off. Some duvet type coats, some dresses, hardly anything in underwear or homewear. Very disappointing. Yes there are masses of pleather leggings.
