Help me devise a good skincare regime for 2024

I'm 47, perimenopausal but on HRT. Skin is sort of combination, pretty decent at the moment, apart from intermittent seb derm which I keep under control with diet and zinc soap.

All I do at the moment on a normal day is micellar water plus water based moisturiser and tinted moisturiser with SPF. I also have some under eye cream that I put on if I think about it. But what else should I be doing? What are these serums that I keep reading about? Any ideas?

If what you’re doing is working, why change it?

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 01/01/2024 18:23

This is a fair question. Perhaps I just leave it as it is!

I use a day moisturiser with spf and vitamin c and a night moisturiser with hydraulic acid. Just those and miclear water to cleanse or a face wash cleanser occasionally. I also exfoliate once a week. Just started using a roller - don't know if it does anything yet but feels nice!

I think consistency is more important than products tbh.

I once used a retinol serum but it gave me spots.

Interested to hear what others say about serum.

I’ve tried loads of serums and the one I keep coming back to is Trilogy Rosehip oil. It’s one of the products that has significantly improved my skin, the other being tretonoin from Skin & Me.

Serums are meant to be an extra boost. Niacinamide if you have oily skin, hyalauronic acid if your skin is dry. Glycolic acid for exfoliation. Some people can tolerate Vitamin C and retinol which are strong exfoliators. Lots of women on mumsnet say tretinoin is the only thing that works, but that’s is you can tolerate it and have bad acne.
If the advertising for a product says “brightening” or “anti-aging” you know it’s not going to do that.

Thanks, guys! I will have a think about it. I feel like I should be taking extra care of my skin now that I'm in perimenopause but wasn't sure where to start so this is very helpful.

I'm a skincare addict, but honestly, if you're happy with your skin, don't change. You'll risk introducing products too strong and mess with your skin. If you do want to try something, I suggest using a proper mild cleanser instead of micellar water like cerave and make sure the spf is 50. Healthy lifestyle will do much more for your skin than serums.

Im 57 and my skin was starting to look awful. I looked great until 53 and literally it fell apart overnight. Used everything and no improvement. Then went to consultant and started Zoskin regime. I can only say WOW! Literally miracle stuff that has improved my skin by 70%. It’s not cheap but the whole regime cost £240 and when you think you can pay £60 for one expensive item I figure it’s acceptable, particularly as I’ve spent nothing on myself in the past 20 years 🥲

suki1964 · 10/02/2024 07:53

Im post menopause and never had HRT so the changes in my skin are phenomenal. Very thin, very dry, but amazingly enough, very clear

For me it was always about hydration. After years of using a light moisturiser, its now heavy duty. skincare I couldn't use before as too rich just soaks up now

So I never actually change regime, hot cloth cleanse and moisturise, but the moisturisers have changed, and definitely for me, one with hyalauronic acid.

I’d swap the micellar water for a balm cleanser that you wash off with a warm flannel, micellar water isn’t supposed to be left on the skin. Then a hyalauronic acid serum, which plumps, but needs to either go on wet skin or you mist the skin before or after applying. If you don’t mist it actually draws moisture away from the skin, so that’s important. Then a moisturiser and a separate spf (moisturiser with spf isn’t enough).

I also use Skin and Me, etc but it sound like that’s probably a bit much for you just now, I’d nip to Boots and pick up a cleanser, serum, mist, moisturiser and spf you could go for a brand like the Inkey list that aren’t too pricey.
