Need a skin care routine

So I’m embarrassed to admit this but I’ve got to my mid 30’s with no real skin care routine. I like to wear make up daily remove with micellar water, wash and that’s about it! I have over the years occasionally used body shops seaweed cleanser, toner and moisturiser and thought I would go back to that but I’ve seen it’s been discontinued.

I would really like to get into the habit of caring for my skin properly. Any recommendations for someone with slightly oily skin - not hugely but not dry either. I have never really had spots / break outs.

Should I get all products from the same brand? Where do I begin (holds head in shame) any advice would be amazing.

I love body shop, their chamomile range is excellent.

I use the jelly cleanser in the am and the balm in the evening. Moisturiser I like their vitamin E range.

The vitamin e overnight mask is great.

I’ve been using Oils of Life face wash, I love it. Just like their lipstick I used for years (Cairo Geranium) it’s been discontinued. I’ve bought some through Amazon, but it doesn’t smell right. Might try the chamomile jelly cleanser.

It depends what you're after. My skincare routine is based on anti aging. So I use spf min of 25 in winter and 50 in spring/ summer or if it's a particularly sunny day. At night i cleanse with superdrug B. s cleansing balm and sometimes double cleanse with skin+me's cleanser if my skin feels dry. I scrub a couple of times a week using either a vitamin c scrub or an oatmeal one. Then I use Tretinoin which you need to get on prescription if you live in the UK so I use skin+Me (I'll post link below to get a free months trial p&p 3.50) retinol is OK but not as strong so effects are slower. I have combination skin but embrace the oilyness as I generally don't get spots. I use a thick moisturiser at night, which varies at the moment I'm just using nivea in the blue tub. In the morning I use a thin amount of a thiner moisturiser to try to minimise my shine!

I'm desperate for a skin care routine too. Also mid 30s and embarrassed to say I just use a facial wash and moisturizer 😣

Caroline Hirons skincare freaks on Facebook is really good OP 😘

You don't need all products from the same brand. I've found a combination of products that seems to work well for me. I have a fairly basic skincare routine but this may give you some ideas.

Morning:
Garnier micellar water
CeraVe foaming cleanser (for normal to oily skin)
Heliocare 360 SPF 50 (this was actually recommended to me on MN, and it's a fantastic spf product if you suffer from oily skin. It doesn't make my face look all greasy like all other SPF products I've tried)

Evening:
Micellar water + cleanser again
Superdrug own brand toner
Olay retinol 24 night cream (I adore this product. Leaves my skin feeling soooo smooth!)

I also used a face exfoliant and sheet mask twice a week.

Here goes my routine just if it helps:
Morning:
Using micellar water to wash your face,
Cerave cleanser,
Garnier spf
Evening:
Vanicream moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel

Why would you be embarrassed? The only skin care that works is prescription Tret and literally any moisturiser and sunscreen. Everything else is a massive con unless you have acne or eczema or a skin condition. That's my opinion anyway.

GoingRoundInOvals · 06/06/2024 15:22

If it helps OP, after years of teenage acne, I still wash my face each morning and night with Dove bar soap, pat dry, and in the mornings put on a face cream from Aldi that has some generic anti aging wording attributed to it.
In the evening if I've been out in the sun all day I'll put on a few drops of a rose hip oil if I remember.

That's it.

Soap, and some moisturiser

No antiaging ingredient works except the miracle drug Tret, as most dermatologists admit. Dermatologist-recommended skin care for your 20s (aad.org) Those 12 step expensive skin care regimens from the likes of Caroline Hirons and various skininfluencers are complete cons. Which is why men don't waste their money on them.

You should be wearing broad spectrum spf of at least 30 every day winter and summer, and if you are out in the sun you should reapply after 2 hours. SPF in makeup or moisturiser isn't enough because you don't apply a thick enough layer of those, though if your sunscreen is moisturizing you might not need a separate moisturiser.
