I'm off to Prague in two weeks for three nights. We have one checked bag between the two of us.

Can anybody help with packing specifics!

I've just come back yesterday from Krakow! It's very cold, so if Prague is following suit weather wise you will certainly want layers!!! I bought some really nice quality thermals from primark of all places. They were a godsend!

AnnaMagnani · 31/12/2023 12:40

Thermals!

We were in Cologne before Christmas and thermal longjohns were crucial.

verrymerryberry · 31/12/2023 12:48

How many layers are we talking here!?

Have a long sleeve thermal top, long sleeve t shirt and a Rab long down jacket. Do I need another layer?

Also I hat about legs? Long johns and jeans?

Yes I live in a cold climate country and I live in M&S thermal control tights under jeans. I bulk buy them when I come home, along with Primark thermal socks. Lidl and Aldi thermal tops are cheap and effective too.

The temp control ones are best because you can go from indoors to outdoors etc without discomfort (I hate overheating too 😅). So you could even wear on the plane.

If you have coated jeans or jeggings these are a bonus because they are a bit more water resistant. Otherwise a long down jacket stops chilly unpleasant winds.

Boots with thick solid soles are also great, the higher you are from the cold ground the more comfortable you'll be.

Gloves and scarf/snood a must. Layers on top are usually best.

Save space by leaving towels, shower gel and hair dryers at home and use the hotel provisions.

Prague is freezing. Definitely layers.

Also cobbles so comfy boots.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 31/12/2023 12:59

Just back from Prague and it was incredibly mild - though the wind could be cold.
I did have a Uniqlo down coat, but was mostly in leather jacket, and would pop my Uniqlo body warmer in bag, plus chunky scarf and hat.
Take shoes that you can walk for miles in, including cobbles.

AnnaMagnani · 31/12/2023 13:08

Long johns and jeans.

Check if there are cobbles. Big mistake on my part, my feet were killing me.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2023 13:11

Longjohns under jeans or thick tights. Thermal T-shirt under merino jumper. Good socks. Comfortable boots. Hat. Long coat. Jumper dress with thermal T-shirt under if you want to be dressier than jeans.

Rocknrollstar · 31/12/2023 13:21

DD and I went to Prague with one suitcase between us but took the largest possible carry on each as well. Mistake we made was in not taking a pair of shoes to wear in hotel. We had to go down to breakfast and sit in the bar in the evening in our fur lined boots

verrymerryberry · 31/12/2023 16:42

This is great- we're not going anywhere fancy just sightseeing and beer drinking.

So I have:
Sorel winter boots
Long rab down coat
Thick gloves
Thin gloves
Trainers
Joggers for flight/ loafing
1x Thermal top
Merino/cashmere mix 1/4 zip jumper
Cashmere Jumper
Sweatshirt
2 jeans
Long sleeve t shirt x 3
Thin polo top
4 x boot socks
2x trainer socks
Thin coat
Down coat
Fleece
Hat
Scarf

This is far too much is it not?!
Talk me down!

Which if this would you wear on the flight?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2023 16:48

That sounds like a lot.

I think I'd do:
wear to travel - jeans, long sleeved top, jumper, big coat, boots, scarf, hat, gloves

Pack:
another pair of jeans
a jumper dress
2 jumpers and 2 long sleeved thermal tops, one of which is polo
longjohns or leggings for wearing under jeans or with the jumper dress.

I wouldn't bother with a thin coat, just a big one. Wouldn't bother with trainers or joggers. I might be tempted to pack a second scarf in a different colour.

AnnaMagnani · 31/12/2023 17:12

I'd skip:

thin gloves
joggers or one of the pairs of jeans
one of the sweatshirts or jumpers
polo top
thin coat
are there 2 down coats - one of those
fleece

If you have thermal baselayer, top, jumper and coat everyday you are done. Possibly something nice for the evening - I packed this and then never wore it as it was too cold to try.

verrymerryberry · 31/12/2023 17:22

Yes only one down coat sorry I put it twice!

Thanks this is so helpful. I will pack a pair of trainers for breakfast and bar etc at hotel.

I do get really hot which I am concerned about over heating.

I think I will travel in day one clothes as our flight is 7am.

I wore everything heavy - coat, winter boots, fattest jumper, scarf, hat, the lot - for travel to cut down on packing.

The joy of layers is you can always take something off.

Me too!

I loved Prague and keep meaning to book a return visit.

verrymerryberry · 06/01/2024 13:18

It's -10* in Prague right now!

Long johns bought

Need another thermal polo neck

Most stores at the tail end of their thermals!

I need a buff to protect my face. Might have a dig in dhs cycling drawer!

We've been to Prague in winter a number of times and wore leggings under skirts or trousers. Layered tops as indoors is always boiling. It's never been excessively cold but when DS went with his friend it -10 during the day.
