Anyone else sick of wearing anoraks?

I have 2 lovely swishy wooden winter coats, that have barely seen the light day this winter.

I'm so sick of having to wear practical rainproof clothing. You need to keep dry so wear an anorak, pair it with ankle boots with sensible grippy soles, then end up wearing jeans and a jumper because they go with your boots.

I mean I like being comfy, but Is anyone else longing to wear something just a bit more grown up? I resorted to a scarf this morning in a vain and pointless attempt at glamour. Unsurprisingly, It didn't work.

Can you get something practical/warm/waterproof that you enjoy wearing?

I live in Scotland (and live in a walkable city plus have a dog so out walking every day). Realistically I know I need something practical but I spent ages looking for a couple of coats that I love and are also warm and waterproof. I don’t mind wearing it. Same with boots too. I have one coat that is very long so I can wear anything underneath eg a skirt and it doesn’t matter. I have some lovely wool coats but save those for dry days.

I find it hard sometimes to find clothes which are beautiful and functional but it’s always worth the hunt for me. Winter clothing doesn’t have to be drab/boring.

I know, If I'm going out I pop a thermoball under a smart wool coat but it's not as warm, and 99 times out o a 100 I crack and choose warmth. Winter! Argh

notmycircusbutitaffectsmymonkeys · 30/12/2023 14:23

What is a thermoball?

FayCarew · 30/12/2023 14:35

I think I'd prefer my trusty boring waterproof to a lovely swishy wooden winter coat Smile

DiamandaTheGreat · 30/12/2023 14:54

I empathise! I wear Didriksons winter coats/parkas, which are on the more stylish side of purely functional, but they're certainly not lovely woollen belted overcoats. I've had my eye on one of the latter at Massimo Dutti in the sale but as a person with extremely curly hair that looks electrocuted at the slightest hint of moisture (i.e. every day), I now only tend to buy coats with hoods, other than my leather biker jacket and a lovely teddy jacket I bought this Autumn for dry cold days.

TheOGCCL · 30/12/2023 15:19

Yes, or puffa coats. So hard to find practical things that also have a bit of class to them.

Citrusandginger · 30/12/2023 16:21

I think @ChilliPB has the right idea. But I've yet to find a waterproof coat that I look remotely stylish in. Grin another downside of being a short arse, I guess.

Off to look at Didriksons...

Yes . I feel like the only clothes I've worn this year have been waterproofs.

notmycircusbutitaffectsmymonkeys · 30/12/2023 14:23

What is a thermoball?

It's a thin thermal anorak made by North face. Luckily quite warm for the thinness I only ever use it to put under a wool coat

SaltyGod · 30/12/2023 16:56

I don’t own an anorak. I mostly wear wool coats and a hat, or I have a Barbour jacket with a hood.

Whilst I’m not hiking over hill and dale, I do all the usual outdoor things; dog walk, school run, walk around town/shops, and have genuinely never been wet through my wool coats or Barbour.

dontgobaconmyheart · 30/12/2023 16:56

Just trying to imagine a wooden coat..

I just wear my woollen type coats anyway - they're perfectly fine for popping out when you're not outside for the duration - eg the shops, out for dinner, a coffee, to a friends, anything inside. None of them have been adversely affected by a little bit of water on them and they're not getting soaked through.

I only wear my ugly waterproofs when the weather is truly horrendous and I know I need to be stood outside or have a walk on my hands, or things like walking the dog.

DanglingMod · 30/12/2023 16:59

Just wear your other coats anyway? I never wear an anorak: long woollen coat, short puffer, wax jacket, denim jacket... I don't wear a hat either, I'd rather get wet than overheat.

Unless you're literally standing outside all day, it's not anorak or nothing!

Doggymummar · 30/12/2023 17:02

I don't own an anorak so no. I have three long as in knee length winter coats that I wear for dog walking and a nicer one for going out the house for other reasons.

coolkatt · 30/12/2023 17:04

have a look at lighthouse jackets/coats. good for rain but a bit better than a normal anorak (even hate the name) x

christmaspawpaws · 30/12/2023 17:09

Thank it depends what you are doing and where you are
I know people are saying about not wearing one but I'm in the NW and it has poured down for weeks now. Anything more than car to bar and you need either an umbrella and/or a waterproof

Brynandwin · 30/12/2023 17:12

Yes it’s rained for months and all my down coats keep getting that horrible wet dog smell. no dog, just that dampness that you have to roast out of coats .On top of this given that every day I just dress as big puffy Michelin man or extra from motherland I’ve given up on bras and my hair is just permanently squished under a big massive hat. I haven’t shaved my legs for months . Gorgeous me 😃
At the first sign of sun i’m having a revolution.

LoobyDop · 30/12/2023 17:17

I’m in the NW and I’ve been wearing wool coats all winter. I only wear waterproof anorak-type things when it’s warm but wet, or if I’m doing actual hiking.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 30/12/2023 17:30

I don't own an anorak. The nearest I've got is an Oska puffa coat which I alternate in wet weather with 2 proper Mackintoshs.

In cold but dry weather I have a number of long, wool overcoats, including 3 Max Maras. The Max Mara coats were worth every penny. There's an instant lift putting them on, no matter how awful hair, make -up, shoes, or what's underneath is.

Citrusandginger · 30/12/2023 17:45

Just noticed the wooden overcoat typo! SorryBlush

Thermoball look interesting. I like lighter weight versions. I was looking at some of the Uniqlo lightweight down back in the autumn but didn't buy anything.

I don't like wearing wool when it's wet as I don't like the smell given off by damp wool, so I prefer washable coats.

GettingStuffed · 30/12/2023 17:53

I'm not sure whether it counts as an anorak but I wear a black and purple ski jacket when it's raining.

FayCarew · 30/12/2023 20:18

It made me smile @Citrusandginger . It's too wet and mild here for a nice woollen coat.

Citrusandginger · 30/12/2023 22:51

There's an instant lift putting them on, no matter how awful hair, make -up, shoes, or what's underneath is.

Yes that's it. Sensible waterproofs just don't have the same effect.
