Gym wear for 40s, overweight woman?

I’m getting back to swimming, weightlifting and yoga. I’ve done all three in the past, but that was 4 stone ago.

All gym wear seems tight and clingy, what can I wear to feel comfortable but not frumpy?

In the past I wore baggy jogging bottoms and hoodies but just looked dreadful! Should I just embrace the Lycra?

Love the photos! I worked out at my new gym for the first time today and wore a frankly terrible outfit. But it was fine, I just plugged in my earphones, focused on myself and enjoyed the exercise.

I actually buy a lot of my leggings from Lidl, and have done from a size 16 Im now in their size 8 .

Hang on! You need to tell us more about this.

Well done! Once you’re over the hurdle of the first workout, it becomes much easier. Also, I know a lot of people say it, but genuinely, no one pays attention to other people in gyms. Everyone just gets on with their workout.

I started back walking last year plus a new job as a lunch time server means I get around 20k steps in a day. As I noticed I was losing I helped it along by cutting the crap, upping the veg and protein and its working. Simple changes really, but consistent. Cutting the bread and crisps was the biggest change I made. Previously my diet was bread heavy - toast and butter for brekkie, sandwich for lunch, bit of toast when the munchies hit. Now I eat about 2 slices a week, usually a roll with bacon at the weekend when Im back from park run ( which I dont run I walk ) As for the crisps which were at least a packet a day habit, well Ive found they give me heart burn now so I dont miss them

Lidl's legging are not all the same, they have different manufacturers so you need to look at them as they come out. The high waisted ones are my preferred ones, ones with pockets

I am very much not thin but do a lot of exercise. The Nike Pro leggings are brilliant, very soft, high waisted and do not fall down. I wear a longer line vest top, layered with a t shirt over them

I wear those, only ones that don't roll down. I think it's the elastic waistband.

I bought these... much more flattering than leggings and not as sweaty as cotton joggers (which are always too hot for me and wash badly!) https://www.marksandspencer.com/high-waisted-straight-leg-joggers/p/clp60488082?intid=mobileappppdpshare

FreezyFord · 01/01/2024 10:58

I should add, I’m in my fifties. Anything other than leggings for the gym would make me stand out more than being a bit chub

Wtfammaduck · 01/01/2024 11:03

I got some ridiculously loud character gym leggings from smaller companies and Indy makers and just wore them the pride.

I didn’t care who criticised because I was making changes and I didn’t care who saw. I had Care Bears and Cookie Monster and aliens and dinosaurs and all manner of silly bright things on my leggings. The brands went up to like 2/3 xl too (I was a l/xl at size 18/20)

Have some fun with what you wear and to hell with anyone else. Don’t hide under big ugly stuff to make others feel more comfortable with your exercising.

Love this post

Precisely , no one is watching, no one cares , everyone is too caught up with themselves to notice anything outside their own wee bubble, so wear whatever you like and enjoy your clothes

( says she who loves Llama Leggings ) :)

I bought some m and s leggings but they are going back. Too short for me and not thick enough to cover my vpl.

any suggestions for thick ones that cover up your knicker line?
