How do I stop make up pilling after moisturiser?

I'm getting on top of my skin and I need a lot of moisture. In the morning I'm using hyaluronic acid followed by LRP gel cicaplast moisturiser and then a normal moisturiser with spf. Maybe I'm just not waiting long enough but I can't get my makeup to go on and not pill. I don't use foundation so this is concealer and powder. Am I not waiting long enough? How long do you wait? Or is there a trick I don't know? Thanks!

Have you got a make up brush? This was an eye-opener to me! Put the moisturiser on and wait several minutes. Then either put on a primer and foundation or just the foundation. Then use the make up brush over your face and you should find it stops it pilling.

Yes I just use a bit of concealer and then some powder which I dot on with a brush. But it pills immediately :-(

Does it pull before make up at all? It's normally because you've got silicones in two of your products reacting to create the pilling. Sounds like it's more likely to be your skincare combination causing it if you're not using foundation. Another angle to try if you find a brush doesn't help.

you need to leave time between each layer to let it properly absorb. So was face, dry and apply HLA. Let that soak in while you brush your teeth. Then moisturise. Go and have your breakfast, then SPF. Get dressed. Then try your makeup. If that doesn't work then maybe consider changing your SPF layer for a BB cream that includes and SPF and will give you a bit of coverage.

Maybe powder isn't the right product on dry skin, surely it just soaks up all that moisture you've put on. Try a liquid foundation.

Your moisturiser could be pilling because:
your skin needs to be exfoliated to prepare a good foundation for moisturiser
you're using too much
it's too heavy in combination with your other products
you're applying it too soon after the gel moisturiser

For really moist skin, have a look at Korean beauty routines. After toner, I use a snail essence or Torriden serum, (sometimes both at night) then moisturise. A separate non greasy SPF 50 sun block then goes on top. I always leave a few minutes between serum and moisturiser in the morning but don't bother at night.

If you’re allowing enough time between skincare and make up it’s probably that the ingredients aren’t compatible. If you’re using a silicone based moisturiser (like the cicaplast gel) then you need silicone based make up on top. Also am I reading correctly that you’re using two moisturisers? That’s a lot of product and is probably not helping, you’re probably going to be better off using a stand alone SPF, both from the pilling point of view and an actually getting decent sun protection point of view.

I read that if you use silicone based products together with water based products, you will get pilling.

So if you can work out which products use silicone - don't mix.

Too much moisturiser. I'd loose the gel one

TheRoaringGirl · 22/12/2023 08:08

Wow so helpful thank you! I'll try this morning without the gel and see if I fare better. Thank you :-)

Rímmels lasting finish fix and go setting spray used as a primer (just a quick spray after moisturiser) solved this problem for me. It's light and stops piling or foundation seeping into pores.

TheRoaringGirl · 22/12/2023 09:14

Just did a bit of an experiment and it looks like the culprit might be the HA! The one I've got is gel-like though I can't see that it contains any silicones in the ingredients. I put it on and then put normal moisturiser on top (skipping the cicaplast) and it just rolled off in pills.

Glad you’ve identified the culprit! I guess you’ll have to only use it at night or on days you’re not wearing make up.
