If you have thick, naturally wavy hair but like to style it straight, what is your hair routine?

My hair is so thick and wavy, this obviously comes with frizz too. I currently just let it air dry then tie it up in a bun but I really want to start looking more put together.

If you have similar hair to me, what does your wash/dry/style routine look like?

With 2 young kids self care has been put on the back burner but I really want to start taking care of myself starting with my hair, help!

I wash it every other day. I use tresemme as it's one of the only shampoos I'm not allergic to, and Garnier hair food as conditioner.

Blast it dry with Dyson hairdryer, then section it off and dry each section straight using a paddle brush.
Then section and straighten. Nothing special really! It stays straight unless I get it wet.

Lsquiggles · 19/12/2023 19:20

Do you use any products before or after straightening to keep it straight?

Wash every 2 days.
Aussie shampoo and conditioner. Blow dry and then straighten. But my hair doesn't go poker straight - just less frizz.
A bit of elnett on day 1. A bit of dry shampoo on day 2 and a bit more with the straighteners.
Every couple of weeks I use a hair mask in the bath.
I don't use heat protection products but my hair is in good condition. I get it cut every 4 months or so and have some of the weight taken out of it.

I don't use any products although I'm thinking of trying colour wow.

I have very frizzy hair. I dry it with the hairdryer, then section it off and use the straighteners on it.
No products. It always comes out dead straight and stays that way unless it gets wet again - but tbf my hair isn't thick. It's fine but abundant.

Toesaresoweird · 19/12/2023 21:19

Very thick, wavy, bleached hair. A total fucking nightmare tbh. I still haven't found a shampoo I'm not allergic to. I can't get away with no conditioner as it gets very dry. Haircuts to take the weight out.

I can't get away without blow drying section at a time. I also have to finish with straightening irons. I look nicer with blow dried hair that's been curled with tongs than straight.

I use a hair primer from M&S it's about £20 for a small tube but it's good. Percy and Reed wonder balm. You don't need loads.

I use hair treatments recommended at the hair salon.

My hair is naturally curly. I wash every 3/4 days. I usually wash it at night if I'm straightening. Wash and deep condition. No product if I'm straightening apart from heat protect spray. I wrap it in a towel while I faff about.

Take the rough off with hair dryer. Use Revlon One step to blow dry. Use straighteners to straighten. Blast with the hair dryer to make sure it is 💯 dry.

If I sleep on it, I use dry shampoo before bed. Then run the straighteners through it again in the morning.

Frizz is caused by excess moisture so you need to make sure your hair is absolutely dry. And then dry it some more!

Comedycook · 19/12/2023 21:21

I wash my hair twice a week.

never ever let it dry naturally. It's so thick it would take hours and hours...in fact so long, I suspect it would start to smell mouldy underneath.

I dry with a hair dryer but rough dry aiming the nozzle downwards. Once fully dry, spritz with heat protection. Pin it all up with a crocodile clip and take small one inch sections and straighten with straighteners. Takes ages.

I won't then use the straighteners until I wash my hair again, unless I'm going out and want to neaten it up a bit

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 19/12/2023 21:32

Wash every other day. I alternate between Garnier ultimate blends honey shampoo and conditioner and OGX apple cider vinegar shampoo and conditioner if I have build up / greasy hair.

Then wrap it in a hair turban for around 20 mins. I then use L'Oréal no hair cut cream on the lengths, usually from about shoulders to ends, then L'Oréal heat protection spray all over, section and blow dry on cool. Then I section it again and use the heat spray again and straighten with GHDS.

I don't use hair ties unless they are silk and I use either a silk sleep bonnet or pillowcase. I also don't brush when dry, only a wide tooth comb when wet.

I also use a deep conditioning mask once a week, usually a Sunday and I'll let my hair air dry this day so it has a break from heat

Tootytoot78 · 19/12/2023 21:36

I have thick coarse hair and if I let it dry naturally it gets a bit of kink to it.
I wash and condition it with Tresemme the one with Marula oil in it, after towel drying I comb 4 drops of Tresemme Marula hair oil through my hair (but not on my crown)
I blast it with the hairdryer, and if I am going out I use my Babyliss Big Hair to style it and finish it with my straighteners.
If I didn't ruthlessly keep my hair under control, I'd bear an unfortunate resemblance to Crystal Tipps!

SarcasmAndCoffee · 19/12/2023 21:39

Mine is naturally really thick, and a mixture of curls and really textured waves (dad had an Afro).

I wash mine with whatever shampoo and conditioner I have to hand, then as I dry I use a small amount of leave in conditioner and a heat protector. Then straighten once dry.

if I want it curly I let it air dry but it takes about 4-5 working days as I just have so much hair

ItsMyPartyParty · 19/12/2023 21:46

Mine is ridiculously thick and wavy. If I just air dry it or blow dry it I get mega pouff. I use a revlon one step these days - works on slightly air dried hair well, gets it under control but with more life to it than it has with straighteners. But if I want it properly straight then it’s quicker to use the one step then straighten rather than blow drying first. I’m on a constant hunt for the right shampoo and conditioner - currently using L’Oréal moisture boosting which seems to be pretty good.

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 19/12/2023 21:47

I have very thick, course, and dry hair. I wash mine every 4 days. I use Davines Love Smooth shampoo and conditioner. I wash twice and condition once. Wrap it in a towel, and then I use Davines Oi Milk. I then dry it with a dryer and paddle brush till completely dry. Then straighteners. Finish it off with a small amount of FrizzEase serum and blast with cold air from the hair dryer. I sleep on silk pillowcases too.

FrizzRaven · 19/12/2023 21:52

Naturally wavy / curly.

Wash every 3 days with a salon shampoo & conditioner. Non salon products leave it like straw.

Wrap in towel and leave for about 15 mins.

Section and blow dry with a paddle brush. Straighten with GSDs. I use heat protector if I remember. Takes 15-20 mins depending on length of my hair.

Dry shampoo on day 3 if needed (or I try and stretch to day 4).

It will still frizz a bit sometimes if I'm outside in damp weather but a quick brush sorts it out.

piscofrisco · 19/12/2023 22:01

I have thick wavy hair prone to frizz. I sleep on a silk pillow case and it's made a huge difference.
If I'm not going out/can't be arsed I wash, condition, pop some kerastese serum through it and leave it to dry, or just blast dry the top. If I'm going out I dry in sections, then straighten. But if gloss spray and hairspray.
I've also recently had some success with a heartless curler thing that you sleep in (silk covered again)-it gave me lovely big bouncy curls once it had dropped a bit after removing and no frizz!

Kwackerly · 19/12/2023 22:08

Thick wavy hair here, but dry.

I wash and condition every other day - i prefer john frieda. Add a tiny bit of kms moist repair to lengths and ends, then light spray of kms thermashape to protect from heat.

Blow dry roughly till 80% dry, then dry in sections using revlon big hair. Pin hair quickly onto big velcro rollers as I dry. Blow dry on cold setting to set, leave for as long as possible, ideally 40 mins or so but 15 will do.

Take down carefully and shake out, finish with goldwell diamond gloss spray to add shine and hold the style.

I also use colour wow every few washes, it's excellent.

People do comment a lot on my hair, and I love the way it looks when I make the effort! Day 2 is a light twist up at night into a bun but this makes it much wavier/scruffier, if i was heading out on day 2 I'd wet and restraighten...

This was a huge essay!

Hollydays · 19/12/2023 22:21

I have thick wavy dry coarse hair which I dye to cover grey. I have a very sensitive scalp so most products irritate my scalp. Anyone have any suggestions?

TGel/nizoral works for my scalp
K18 worked for my hair condition but irritates my scalp.

Anyone got products for a bad scalp/frizzy thick hair combo that works?

Jakadaal · 19/12/2023 23:48

I am lucky in that my hair can last up to 5 days between washes (I appreciate some might find this rank Grin)

I use Kerastase Discipline shampoo and John Frieda frizz ease flawlessly sleek conditioner. I still with Living Proof 5:1 hair treatment. Blow dry and then straighten finished with Kerastase serum

auburnglow788 · 20/12/2023 00:04

Have a look at Colour Wow Dream Coat spray. Spray all your hair before drying it with a Revlon big brush. Leaves my curly hair smooth and frizz free.

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/12/2023 05:44

I wash my hair every other day and also use the Revlon one step hairdryer. As for products, I use Aveeno oat milk shampoo for dry hair, the Aussie conditioner and 3 miracle oil. I probably should use a blow dry spray as well but don’t. The one step hairdryer gives me straightish hair in about 15 mins with a slight kink at the ends, which I prefer to poker straight. Dd is getting some ghds for Christmas. I may have a go with these though as I ruined my hair straightening it a few years ago.
