A hair colour one - my error or theirs?

Not sure whose fault this is, nor am I planning to complain.

I posted before about highlighting Asian hair.

Went to the salon today with the plan for doing a T section. Spoke to loads and this was the only place I felt did a proper explanation.

I noticed when they did the foils, it looked like a lot more than I thought for a T section but I have no experience so kept quiet.

They left bleach on for 45 mins, as per the strand test, and from speaking to other hairdressers, that's the standard idea about how long it will taje to bleach Asian hair.

Then after they did the colour and blow dry, I realised I wasn't happy but thought perhaps I'd picked the wrong colour. I raised that possibility and they said no, it just needs to be a shade darker, we won't charge extra because we want you to be happy.

I thought it was okay after the second try but did comment that they had done a lot more than I thought, plus they seemed to have dyed the top layers but not the rest.

At this point I think they probably wanted me to leave as much as I wanted to go home. The lady who did it did look a bit worried and I saw her exchange glances with her boss, who might not have been happy with it either? He did check it the second time when it was developing.

I am now home and under bright light, it looks awful and very "orange henna". Plus there is so much of it! I am amazed that's considered a T section.

Not sure who is at fault, also if I picked the wrong colour the second time, shouldn't they have said?

I think a dark brown (not black) box dye will need to go on it tomorrow.

Be interested to know if I made any poor choices here. I was expecting glints of colour. Has T section changed meaning?

Thanks.

Warm brown with a hint of gold

yes, there's some errors in comms I expect

I'll not complain to them, I just wanted to get it out of my system and rant on here.

it's all fixed now and I will do a deep condition on the next couple of washes.

As previous poster said, I would leave this to a professional to sort out as you risk further damage to your hair. I would concentrate on conditioning and looking after it and waiting a few weeks before colouring again. Apparently hair is more porous approximately 2 weeks after bleach/colour so anything you put on top now may come out stronger or patchy.

Treat it gently and find a colourist based on recommendations. Do you research and go with clear instructions and photos of what you want to avoid any future miscommunication

EarringsandLipstick · 21/12/2023 07:39

I attacked it with a bristle brush before putting the semi on.

OP what are you doing? This is terrible for your hair.

Also, stop messing around yourself with colour.

So would it be normal to have a block of colour next to your natural colour, with such a huge difference in colour?

No but your photo is so bad, just showing a tangled mess of hair that it's impossible to tell what it looks like. The colour I can see looks ok, I think.

Go to another hair salon or back to this one if you prefer, but stop messing with your hair!

What do you mean, 'it's all fixed now?'

Just want to add from reading these posts I have no clear idea what you wanted your hair to look like in the end result so the hairdresser might have been the same. Best thing is to always have a picture of what you like and ideally want and the hairdresser can discuss if this will work for you.

With a t bar or half head and dark hair with blonde highlights there is going to be a sharp contrast so a full head of balayage might have been a better result

I think from what you are describing I would ask for lowlights- so that when you move you get a few natural flashes of a golden colour but your hair primarily looks darker?
I wouldn't ask for balyage personally, but balyage varies absolutely loads between salons and people who do it.
I have highlights and to me highlights absolutely pack in the colour. If I asked for my T doing, I would still expect them to be packed in, but it would just cover my roots and the bits you can see with my hair tied back.

But, you're not a hairdresser, they are, and if you've described something, and hopefully show a picture, they shouldn't expect you to know the name of it. If I asked for subtle highlights, I would not expect to come home with a t of hair lighter than the rest.

A warm brown with gold in is going to have some red/orange in it. That’s what makes it warm. I just put warm gold brown hair in Pinterest and the vast majority of photos have an auburn look to them.

Which is why it may look a bit orange in some lights. Though it doesn’t look orange in the photo. I am assuming you didn’t show a picture. I think you didn’t want a warm gold brunette colour.

I’m back to have a rant just to get it out of my system. It’s covered by a semi now.

Have attached a pic.

I took the pic after deliberately rough brushing so the semi permanent colour would take better - it is normally smooth.

But that’s how the contrasted hair looks if you are up close.

Whatever they think is a correct way to do highlights, no one wants their hair contrasting like that?

This was bugging me all night. I looked up how many foils are in a T section and got figures ranging from 7 to 25. Given how clear I was about adding touches of colour, they maybe should have suggested balayage or said how many foils is normal?

I would actually like to go and complain to the salon but I’m still not sure if some of this is my fault and I didn’t understand the service.

I showed fuller pics to two Aunties last night and they said “but lots of Indian women choose to henna hair like that”.

Maybe - but I don’t feel that was what to expect from T section highlights.

I’m also reluctant to complain because I think I’ve misunderstood. When I had it done 29 years ago, I think it was 7 foils, delicately painted in two different shades. So probably balayage but under another name.

A few family friends go to this salon so I’m also reluctant to complain because of that. If I thought I could discreetly catch the salon owner, I wouldn’t mind so much but I worry the girl who did my hair - junior stylist- might get into trouble.

Pleased to say I’m pretty much restored to my usual colour. If glints come through as it wears off, I don’t mind. It’s going to be a hassle as I normally wash my hair daily but want the semi to last.

I think I will have to do another semi in a couple of months and after that will try a permanent dye.

Any chance the semi will cover the highlights for good?!

You paid for that?
Sorry it's awful

the colour looks less orange in this pic because we have bright white halogen lights.

it looks more like they dyed a T section rather than highlighting a T section.

I won't complain but I certainly won't complain about having boring hair again! 😂

my hair condition is good but I read that roughing up the cuticle was a good plan for dyeing so I attacked it with a bristle brush before putting the semi on.

Roughing up the cuticle??
Dear me

Tempnamechng · 21/12/2023 14:34

From your first couple of posts I would have said you needed someone who is knowledgble in Asian hair, but I see from updates that family members use the same hairdresser. Don't mess with it, find a photo of what you wanted to save confusion and go back. The exchanged glances you mentioned would have been because the stylist could sense you weren't happy.

Sorry it's awful

Thank you! I feel better now someone acknowledged that.

Also thank you to the poster who said I shouldn’t have to identify what I’m after. Every salon I went to looked at the pic and said “you want highlights”.

It’s my first and last experiment. I agree the photo looks like the right colour, it’s the bright white light. That’s not how it looks in natural light.

but surprised more posters can’t see the awful blocking effect.

I showed family a full set of photos and they all said “lots of women have hair like that”. Oh well. At least I know it’s it not for me and it looks absolutely normal now as I didn’t have a hard colour to restore.

if the bleach starts to show as the semi wears off, I will end up with I wanted, for a while anyway.

It feels like such a waste of time as well as money because they were happy to really explain the process and go through lots of client pics. Ironically, one of the salons who just said “you need highlights, when do we book you in” would probably have done the same.

honestky when I go grey I will just try a home highlight kit. We certainly now know that my hair takes bleach easily!
