Finally sorted the dry, cracked, sore flaky lip problem!

I have tried EVERY balm you can think of and then some. Even the medicated blistex stuff that went AWOL for a bit doesn't work for me.

But I have finally found what works. Lip oil on at night (currently using Aldi cheapy), let it "soak in" for a minute or two then an occlusive layer (currently Dr PawPaw as that's what I have to hand but have also used vaseline!)

When I wake up all those annoying little dry flakes are gone. Cracks are gone, lips aren't as dry! I'm so relieved I could cry!

It's not just the lip oil or the occlusive layer as neither of those have worked for me when used by themselves. The combination of both overnight and then an ordinary lip balm during the day seems to have been the holy grail combination. It's fixed me in 3 days.

Anyhow I know it's a boring thread topic but thought I'd share in case it helps anyone else.

What even is lip oil? I will google, but that is interesting.

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 18/12/2023 20:38

I don’t think you can beat Lansinoh (the breastfeeding stuff). It’s the best.

ChiaraRimini · 18/12/2023 20:39

I'm interested- been battling this for ten years. What lip oils work?

Tried it after hearing everywhere that it was great for sore lips. It unfortunately did absolutely nothing for me. :(

Having googled, hemp oil is meant to be good.

I'm using the Aldi Lacura pro collagen one which was cheap as chips. Think it's a dupe for. Charlotte Tilbury one. I think the general process would work with any moisturising (not tinted) lip oil though. There's also some of the Aldi one for sale on eBay/Vinted if you wanted to try this exact one. It's the Pro Collagen one.

I love a lip oil!! My lips have been sooo dry this year too, no matter how much water I drink!! For me, the only thing that's been working and made my lips soft once again is Lush snow fairy lip mask. It smells amazing too! Usually can't stand the smell of Lush stuff, but this really works well.

Puffypuffin · 18/12/2023 21:17

The only one that works for me is Burt's and Bees lip balm. It's made a massive difference for me.

Handsnotwands · 18/12/2023 21:20

interesting. Is lip oil fundamentally different to m, say, a facial oil?

I’ve got chronically dry lips, no lip balm makes a difference. No lansinoh / 8 hr cream / SLS free toothpaste even touches them 😞

I think they are pretty different but don't ask me how. Lip oil feels thicker than facial oil to me. I'm like you in that I'd tried 8 hour cream, lansinoh, burts bees, carmex, blistex, lip scrub, you name it, I tried it. This is the only thing that's worked! There's a fair few cheapish lip oils on the market if you wanted to give it a go. I'm not guaranteeing it'll work for you by any means but it's been nothing short of a miracle for me!

The only thing that is fool proof for me is the - very random - Cath Kidson lip balms. Got one in a gift set a couple of years ago and it transformed my lips.

Very glossy so would work as a clear lip gloss

TinaYouFatLard · 18/12/2023 21:26

I tried everything for many years. I always had sore, chapped lips and would actually feel panicky if I didn’t always have a lip balm to hand. At some point I went cold turkey on the lot and my lips healed themselves. I now don’t need to use anything even in cold weather.

Handsnotwands · 18/12/2023 21:31

In the interests of willing to try anything I’ve put on some facial oil and what I thought was paw paw but is actually wonder balm 🤣. Will repot back and then go and buy the actual things you’ve suggested

Haha, good luck! Who knows, you may have inadvertently hit on your own miracle!

I find the more I use balms the worse my lips are. I cured chapped lips by going cold turkey. Never have a problem now. I use lipstick once a day and never need anything.

Redshoeblueshoe · 18/12/2023 22:33

I've never even heard of lip oil, but I'm adding it to my shopping list

I tried that after all the recommendations on here. It didn't work for me.
I use Nuxe and paw paw ointment at night. Works for me

I might give your plan a go. I am a chronic lip-biter, so always seem to have little flaky bits. They catch lipstick or even tinted balm and look awful. I always have a lip balm handy, and put it on before bed as well.

My DH had a medical issue resulting in dry cracked lips and he used La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume which healed his lips in a few days.

Birdcar · 18/12/2023 22:52

If you live in a hard water area, try drinking bottled water for a week to see if it makes a difference. You might find you have no dry flaky bits to deal with.

Cheeesus · 19/12/2023 10:38

I remembered that we have skin stuff with hemp oil in - this

https://amzn.to/41syGPg

put some on a bit before bed and then lip balm on top at bedtime and my lips are much better this morning.

I wonder if many lip balms only give a barrier rather then actual moisture.

GoonDog · 19/12/2023 12:58

I use aqueous cream on my lips (and face), then cover my lips with a thin layer of vaseline. Does the trick.

We use this and a healthy rub of metanium on the skin around overnight and compeed patches during the day - my sons was so bad at times he was admitted to hospital his lips were so cracked and bleeding and infected / this is what they did pretty much and we’ve continued where needed and it heals in hours or days

Eye cream on lips works wonders and Bepanthen never fails.
