'Bum flap' on long tops / dresses

Ok, that's probably not the technical term! What I mean is when tops are cut so that the back half is a couple of inches longer than the front half. This seems to be quite common and for me it's just annoying - I try something on, from the front it looks good, but the back is the wrong length.
If anything I need clothes cut longer at the front since that's where I stick out. After years of vaguely wondering about this I thought I'd post on MN to ask if anyone actually likes this design feature?

Nope, l hate it. I consider myself a well balanced girl, so l like things symmetrical 😂

I think it's to facilitate French/other partial tucks? I don't mind the back being slightly longer if the front is cropped. But I like split hem details too, which MN seems to loathe, and I despise tunic length tops, which seem well liked 😀

If you want to be able to bend forward without having a builder’s crack? It’s not there for when you’re standing up, it’s there for when you’re bent over rummaging in your bag.

Not a fan of tops like that either…I’m definitely an apple shape, and if I try on a top that style I look like a toddler.

They emphasise my belly and make me look pregnant. And that's even when I'm not overweight. Plus I have a sticky-out bum, so the long flap often bunches on top.

Maybe they look good on women with completely flat stomachs - ie who have never been massively pregnant or have saggy post-menopause flesh.

Some of us like tops cut long at the back as that's where we 'stick out'. We're all different shapes. Just buy what suits you.

TiptoeTess · 17/12/2023 12:36

No, they make me look like a weeble.

I don't wear low rise jeans. I find them incredibly uncomfortable.

FestiveFrederica · 17/12/2023 13:37

I'm not a fan of these either tbh. I do like longer tops. I'm tall and have an awful big tummy. So most tops these days just highlight my worst feature. I need a good bit of length, but want it the same all the way round.

LimeCheesecake · 17/12/2023 13:38

They are designed for tops that should be fully tucked in- because you normally want a bit more length at the back to avoid exposing your arse crack if you have to bend down, but adding the same length at the front will make tucking it in neatly tricky.

FestiveFrederica · 17/12/2023 13:54

Ah that makes a bit more sense lime! I wouldn't tuck in very often tbh, so probably why I hadn't thought of that.

Pipistrellus · 17/12/2023 13:57

Can you even buy low rise women's jeans anymore? I don't own jeans that don't cover me.

jay55 · 17/12/2023 16:31

Am pear shaped and prefer them.

LoobyDop · 17/12/2023 16:37

I prefer them, I think the additional shaping makes tops look less boxy and more flattering.

StarlightLady · 17/12/2023 16:37

I’ve already commented seriously up thread. But I’ve now got visions of a shop assistant saying “what size bum flap are you?”. 😀

Well that would make sense as a theory, except that it's also found on tops which are so long that as a short person I'd wear them as a dress - and at the back they go down almost to the back of my knees!

I like this style. Although tbh i only clicked on this post as I thought you were talking about bum flaps that allow you to toilet without taking a whole jumpsuit off....I'll let myself out now

NorthCliffs · 17/12/2023 17:53

Wear it backwards?
