Black Tie/Cocktail dress help!

Hi I'm hoping someone can help me please! I'm going to a sports club dinner in a few weeks. Dress code says something like 'black tie is encouraged but cocktail attire and club blazers are also acceptable'. I haven't been before and I'm the date of a club member. He says if I want to wear an evening gown he'll go black tie to match, but if I go less formally he'll wear his blazer. He's been in previous years and says most people don't do black tie. Would this dress be ok? I'm really struggling to find a long evening dress that suits me as I'm 6ft and the range is limited and very bridesmaid-esque all which look too puffy and frothy. Most standard length evening dresses I've tried end up falling mid ankle which looks bizarre. So I decided I'd go for a midi which I can pull off. I'm just not sure if it's too sparkly or OTT and I'll look a bit silly! Thank you

Obvs that's the model in it, not me (sadly), I'm a size 12/14 so don't look quite as svelte and stylish!

I think that dress is perfect for the type of event you're describing and your date could go black tie or just jacket with it and look completely fine either way.

It's perfect, evening without being full on red carpet

Frasers · 12/12/2023 11:34

That’s lovely, great choice.

IdealisticCynic · 12/12/2023 11:35

I think it’s lovely, and perfect for the dress code you have described. I hope you have a wonderful evening.

Love it! In that situation I'd normally go for something cocktail and midi-length like a tailored sheath dress, but what you've picked is perfect I reckon.

SleighAnotherDay · 12/12/2023 11:52

Oh phew. Thank you all so much for the reassurance! I just didn't want to look like I'd wrapped myself up in tinsel if I arrive and every other woman is in more sedate non-sequin outfits. I've been trying dresses for weeks and found nothing that fits the bill til this one. Hopefully now I can stop searching at last Grin

@DiamandaTheGreat I was definitely hoping to find something a bit sleeker in a midi/cocktail length, but sadly all the sheath dresses I tried did not flatter my lower bumpy half at all! So I needed something with a bit more of an A-line than totally figure hugging. Glad you think it'll be appropriate.

@Vuurhoutjies thank you, that would have been my next question! If he decides to go black tie would I have looked weird next to him in it, so another phew! Thanks

I think black tie events are the one time that men are likely to be more "dressed up" than women! I used to attend quite a few black tie events for work and the men all wore tuxedos but the women very seldom wore full blown evening gowns - it was much more in line with what you've got here, or even more cocktail like.

Perfect!

AdaColeman · 12/12/2023 12:25

That dress will be perfect for the event you've described, and your partner can choose to wear what he is happiest with.
Have a fab night!

Agree with PP that it's a perfect dress. It would do for both black tie and cocktail. Really good choice!
