Non toxic clothes, where?

Potter10 · 12/12/2023 07:05

Can anyone point me in the direction of non chemically clothes please? I'm a complete novice, I've googled but get limited results and feel there may be a whole world of it that I'm missing.
I'm currently 18 weeks pregnant and have developed an extreme sensitivity to pretty much all my clothes. My skin is burning and covered in painful red bumps. Bonus points if they have maternity wear!

What are you washing your clothes with?

Potter10 · 12/12/2023 07:16

Fairy non bio. I've not changed it recently. I know it's the clothing as this happened in the last month or so of my last pregnancy, it wasn't such an issue then though as it was hot so I could just wear floaty dresses.

Do you have any idea of what "chemical" in particular you think you've got a problem with? It might be worth doing some sort of elimination method. Even natural fibre clothing often has artificial dyes in or chemicals applied to the fabric, without knowing what you need to avoid it may be a struggle!

Everything is made of chemicals. Just wait til you hear about dihydrogen oxide!

determinedtomakethiswork · 12/12/2023 07:30

Are you sure it's actually your clothes? Have you seen a doctor?

hangingonfordearlife1 · 12/12/2023 07:48

really doubt it's your clothes. Go see a doctor. itching and rashes need to be taken seriously in pregnancy

I think you mean dihydrogen monoxide.

I have this problem and it tends to be clothes with certain strong smelling dyes/ where the clothes have been kept near or with formaldyhyde type chemicals to deter pests in the warehouses/ during shipping. I find organic ethical clothes brands far better as even organic cotton in high st stores usually has the strong chemically dyes on it. Frugi and Kite are two I love, Frugi does maternity wear as well. Also Duns Sweden or Maxomorra- those two tend to be fair more patterned so it depends how patterned/ plain you like your clothing.

If you're sure it's clothing (rather than diet or other environmental factors) look for all-natural fibres and avoid fast fashion and saturated or bright colours. No guarantees they will be free of your particular triggers but some general regulatory lables to look for are bluesign, Oeko-Tex, GOTS too. And definitely switch to a fragrance free wash. I like Ecover but plenty others.

Can you your GP for a pregnancy safe anti histamine? You don't know exactly what your allergic too so it may take a while to figure out and it will take the itch away while you do

yikesanotherbooboo · 12/12/2023 12:41

It doesn't sound plausible that it is toxic clothes although I would, and do, buy natural fibres and wash before wearing. You need to see or at least speak to your GP and to take some photos.

@DinosaurOfFire Thank you for your reply. I'll have a look at them now. I've looked on frugi before actually and quite like their clothing.
